I recently traveled to Hong Kong, Beijing, Shanghai and Tokyo for business. I don't know how the Japanese do it, but Tokyo is one of the cleanest, most organized cities I've ever visited. It wasn't my first time there, but this was my first extensive stay in the city. Not a piece of trash on the streets. Top notch customer service like I've never experienced before. Every hotel staff member, restaurant waiter, bartender, store clerk catered to our every need and was always two steps ahead of us. They could anticipate what you wanted even before you asked. And the food! Wow. Down to the presentation, just top notch. I know that Koreans are very competitive with their Japanese neighbors, but I gotta admit, even though Seoul has its charms, it ain't got nothing on Tokyo. Not to mention some of the most beautiful women I've ever seen. Never thought much of the Japanese women back home or the tourists I've met during my travels, but you go to Japan and it's a whole 'nother story.

Koreans seem to revel in the backwardness, ignorance and provincial
level of sophistication. I think it has several causes:

-their language isolates them, therefore 99.99% of world media
is closed to them. They have no idea about how things really are
or what "quality" really means
-they are still reeling from 35 years of Japanese colonization and
therefore want to do things the "Korean" way, regardless of how
useless this "way" is
-Confucianism is a ball and chain that should be tossed into the
trash can at the earliest possible time

Even in metropolitan Seoul, Koreans till stare at foreigners. This
is almost unbelievable in the world's 13th largest economy. Koreans
should wear signs that read: "I live in cave, I have no idea about the
rest of the world and I DON"T want to know either"

Tokyo is freaking expensive. It's so expensive even the Japanese don't want to spend money there. That's why so many of them fly to Seoul to go shopping.

Can't say I blame them.

It actually isn't that much more expensive in Tokyo (or Japan in general). You can even get an apartment, maybe a bit older, in Shinjuku in the 60,000-80,000 yen range. No more pricier than Kangnam...and I'd much rather live in Shinjuku.

I'm in a suburb 30 min outisde of Osaka and 30 min from Kyoto. I pay the same for an apartment as I did in Seoul...except it's twice the size.

Grocery stores: fruit and veggies are more expensive in Japan. Meat is cheaper. Liquor is cheaper. Western items are more widely available and cheaper.

And with the exchange rate, I'm currently saving more in Japan than Korea.

Don't believe the "expensive" hype. You'll only be poor if you're always at the bar...which I sometimes am!

Seriously now that the won's exchange rate has gone back down to its historical norm, what can conceivably be keeping people in Korea instead of Japan? I am so out of here.

I couldn't stay in Tokyo for long. The food just isn't good enough. Small portions for too much money. My friend there took me to his favourite neighbourhood chicken place and it was five tiny pieces of chicken.

Also, have you noticed the Coke tastes different there? It tastes like it was mixed in with soy sauce. I don't understand why, but I couldn't live in a country where the Coke tasted weird.
