|
|
This morning I turned on the computer and my web homepage
was changed to paran.com, my desktop wiped clean, except for
the basics, my browser fonts have changed, programs I downloaded
removed and my 'favorites' list gone.
I know that people 'browse' my desk, looking at papers
and such, but this is weird.
Are these changes possible without the deliberate tinkering of the computer?
There were alot of important files(school related) on the desktop
and i'm a little pissed. |

That doesn't happen by accident. It was done on purpose. Tell your school you need to be informed before they mess with it next time... |

I was thinking some new funky virus or something. Or, and this is the preferable explanation, that there was some internal error that caused my computer to reset itself to a preset time.
Is this a stretch ? |

Download a free 1 month trial of ESET NOD32 .
It will find whatever it was. |

No, my computer isn't password protected. If I knew who it was, if it
was a person, i would feel gratified at the wtf face....but I don't know who..

That is the question, is it a virus.
If it is then it is the cleanest, most user friendly virus
i've seen.
I am thinking that it was someone who just wanted to make my life a little 'difficult'. |

It sounds like your computer had a fresh install of windows done when you weren't looking - the tech came to our school and did the same about a month ago... or the HDD or computer itself was changed out.
There is no virus that I am aware of that will do that to you.
The only way to know for sure is to ask your co-teacher / handler.

I didn't think of that. Logical enough. That may be the case. The lack of notice is not surprising.
In order to remain stress free , I will accept this as the
explanation. |

Situations like this can easily be avoided if you have your own notebook computer. Password protect it and all your files, programs, settings will always work and never be fiddled with. If is FAR better than relying on school computers are are poorly maintained at best or used as student pc bangs at worst.

they re-imaged your computer. all your data is GONE.
Always backup!
unlikely anything can be done. Someone should let you know of this before it happens so you have a chance to backup.
I'd be pissed if i were you. |

I've had co-workers jump on my machine, for whatever reason and close my browser and programs I had going before they would do their thing.
Why would you do that? More than once too. |

go into bios and password protect the entire computer.
bios will be in english, so it's easy enough to do.
screw 'em ... they should have asked you first. |

Will going into bios and password protecting it prevent the techi from fiddling ? I would think that they have some goodies that could bypass
that difficulty.
I have made it very clear to the techi and the computer guy in the room that I have very important documents on the desktop that I need.
The reimaging or reinstalling the browser, if that what was done
would have been done with the full knowledge that I would be pissed.
Glad I'm leaving soon. |

I'm confused. Wasn't it obvious that this was the case after the first response? I told you your school did it right in that post. |
