Seoul and outer satellite cities house over half the population of this country. It is the cultural, financial, and entertainment capital of Korea. It is a wonder (albeit a messy one) of rapid capitalist expansion and economic development. It is the center of the world's 13th largest economy. And I get nervous/curious/malicious stares every day here.
Korea's redneck past isn't just nipping at its heels, it's got it in an ankle lock. |

Bingo bango. If this were Daejon, Buyeo, Chuncheon, Jeonju, etc, I'd be a little less likely to paint Koreans with the redneck brush. |

It's not so much it's redneck past but rather the simple fact that they don't like you! Look at areas in the US that have been taken over by Koreans. They cater to Koreans and don't want anything to do with anyone else, except other Koreans. Of course the second generations and beyond are different. Look at how the banks treat foreigners. Look at the sensationalist news stories about evil English teachers. All of the threads like this on this board can be summed up like this: they don't like us and don't want us here. End of story. Once you realize that fact, everything else will make sense.
I have some decent friends in Korea and they have heard an earful about my experiences ranging from the death stares, the treatment at the bank, and getting screwed over at work. Now, if those friends were in the US and experienced that kind of crap, I would raise hell with the bank and the school, and get in the face of the people who gave them dirty looks. In other words, I would go to bat for them because that kind of thing is wrong in any country. Would my Korean friends do the same thing for me here? I think you know the answer to that one. |

Sometimes when you just sweep through a place it can seem magical, but all this can be misleading, and the true character of a city often takes longer to reveal itself.
I lived in Tokyo for a year, and whilst the love affair was torrid and passionate in the beginning, by the end of it I was happy to be getting out. It is a cool town, but the expensive of it truly does grind you down, and you get sick of having to budget for nights out and spending the last week before every pay cheque crying as you count what's left of your yen and wondering how you're going to make it. I prefer living somewhere with a cost of living that allows me a bit more sponteniety in my social planning. Furthermore, Tokyo, or at least the people that live there, started to feel just a little bit too clean to me, and I eventually found myself longing to be walking around streets that had a bit more grit and tension to them. Of course, a whirlwind sex/business tour like the OP indulged in is certainly different from trying to eke out a miserable living as a lowly teacher.
Anyway, I prefer Seoul. I like the hills that rise in the city, and I like the huge swathe of space that the river cuts through the middle of it. And you may not believe this, but I prefer Koreans too. They are a lot more aggressive and communicative than the Japs, which to me is a good thing.
As far as the women are concerned, I think anyone who genuinely believes that Japanese women are hotter than Korean ones definitely needs to reassess their sexuality, because there is something seriously wrong with the wiring. Seriously. |

If you find Korean girls "way hotter" than Japanese girls, it means you're probably a hick... not that's anything necessarily wrong being a hick, but that's what it makes you...
As far as I'm concerned, Korean girls are only sexy in that shag-able, cute girl next door kind of way, but I've never met one that really knocked my socks off. When you go to a real alpha-grade world city like Tokyo, you see what refined, classy, truly sexy women are all about. There's so many factors at play, but the girls in Korea are just not on that level... |

Ha! You make my life seem more exciting than it really is. Yes, I "met" lotsa beautiful Japanese women behind closed doors, but trust me, no sex was had. Plus, I worship my fabulous and beautiful Korean girlfriend.

Just to clarify, I never said that I thought Japanese women are hotter than Korean women. Though it's really a matter of personal opinion, on the whole, I find Korean women more attractive. But damn, some of the Japanese girls were smokin'! |

I couldn't stay in Tokyo for long. The food just isn't good enough. Small portions for too much money. My friend there took me to his favourite neighbourhood chicken place and it was five tiny pieces of chicken.
Also, have you noticed the Coke tastes different there? It tastes like it was mixed in with soy sauce. I don't understand why, but I couldn't live in a country where the Coke tasted weird. |
Wow... are you actually saying this? Tokyo is the best city for food on the planet, bar none. It absolutely blows Seoul out of the water.
You can get any kind of food in Tokyo from any country, and it's always excellent, whether French, Italian, Korean, Chinese, etc. Tokyo is seriously a gourmand's heaven, that's always what I look forward to most when I go there is eating.
Btw, the "five tiny pieces of chicken" is yakitori - you're supposed to order more and eat it as a snack with your beer. It's only street food... sheesh. |

Korean women are hotter, and if you disagree with my OPINION, you're gay.

Japanese women are hotter, and if you disagree with my OPINION, you are ignorant.
What's next? Batman is cooler than Spiderman and if you disagree, you're gay. Spaghetti is better than lasagna and if you disagree, you're ignorant. |

The bank isn't discriminating against you because your foreigner....more so for red tape reasons...
Seriously, I've never experienced any of what you said, nor 95% of the rude behavior Koreans are said to exhibit...
As for the staring.....I'm guessing some of you guys were nobodies back home....If you dress well, look different, and are reasonably attractive, people will stare back in the states......if a korean is staring, he's curious not threatening you... |

Might be a fair point about Japanese woman being better when they hit that elite level, but let's face it, that level is out of both of our reach.
I'm not a hick, just a realist. And the reality is that the percentages play out a lot better in K-world. I actually think Japanese women are nicer than Korean ones, but that's another topic... |

It was more expensive than a bigass order of chicken you could get in a Korean hof, and not quite as good.
I'm sure Japan has a ton of great food, but it also has a ton of freaky food I'd rather avoid, not to mention unreasonable prices. No, I'm not a fan of sushi. I prefer hunks of meat wrapped in lettuce and dipped in salt that fill you up, and while you can get that in Japan too, it costs too much.
Also, without a decent Coke, it's hard to enjoy any food. |

Actually I don't mean the elite ones, just that your "average" good looking Tokyo girl (not talking just the top percentile) is very fashionable and sexy compared to most of those in Seoul. Both countries have got their fair share of fit female specimens, but for me it's above all the cultural factors that makes the J-girls so much sexier than Korean girls.
Nevertheless, I'll concede it's merely my opinion and nothing more... |
