My colleagues and I were in an interesting debate today about anti-discrimination laws in Korea, particularly when it comes to nationality. All I could find is this old article:

http://www.koreatimes.co.kr/www/news/nation/2007/09/117_10958.html

Does anyone know where one could find this law in both English and Korean? It would be helpful to our debate.

Hahaha....

Did you know it's illegal to proceed through an intersection on a red light? Laws are one thing. Enforcing them is another.

FINALLY!!! Now they'll stop the discrimination, just like they stopped the sex-workers, the bikes on the sidewalk, forged degrees, plagiarism, pissing on the street...

Yeah, as effective as most Korean "laws". It's tough to have a law if it ain't enforced.

Hey Cubanlord,

Try this possible source. It's a bit outdated (pub. 1994) but I think it is relevant to your question/request. If you're teaching at a uni, which I think you currently are, then you should be able to find it in your uni library.

Sung Chul Yang, The North and South Korean Political Systems-A Comparative Analysis, Westview Press, Seoul, South Korea, 1994, p. 936.

Appendix

The Constitution of the Republic of Korea

Chapter 2. Rights and Duties of Citizens (p. 936)

Article 10.

All citizens shall be assured dignity and value of human beings and have the right to pursue happiness. It shall be the duty of the State to confirm and guarantee the fundamental and inviolable human rights of individuals.

Article 11

1) All citizens shall be equal before the law, and there shall be no discrimination in all fields of political, economic, social or cultural life on account of sex, religion or social status.

2) No privilaged caste shall be recognized or ever established in any form.

3) The awarding of decorations or distinctions of honor in any form shall be effective only for recipients, and no privilaged status shall be created thereby.

Hell... while it's not an anti-discrimination 'law', you only have to look as far as the Korean Labor Standards Act to find an anti-discrimination clause.... of course, I don't smoke in the hof either. Wink
