|

Hey folks,
I'm flying in this weekend, and I'm trying to figure out the best way to bring about 15 larger sized drawings and one oversized mural that rolls up into a 5 foot long half foot wide log.
The rub is that these are all my originals and I have no copies. I would like to have them with me in my apartment but I'm reluctant to bring them with me through baggage checking on the first go since it sounds like I am going to be hopping various carriers after having checked through my baggage originally from baltimore. In my untutored mind this suggests a higher chance of my bags getting lost.
People on this board have already been kind enough to suggest I have them shipped to me once I get settled in, but I just wanted to ask if that's necessarily safer.
Thanks

use a private courier service such as FedEx, UPS or DHL (all have offices here)
photograph before hand because of course you are going to take out insurance on them
then be prepared to deal with imbeciles who may not understand what your concerns are
good luck! |

Thanks again, Moosehead =) Just get an icky feeling about sending them along a line of strangers. But of course it would be pretty unpleasant to have it lost by the airlines too. |

don't worry - the imbeciles will be at the counters - the delivery folks have VERY competitive jobs - losing a package would probably mean losing that cushion they work so hard for so they'll take very good care of them.
oh, and you're welcome - always good to know another artist is here.
send me a pm when you are settled in, ok? or post if you can't pm |

Hi.
I have moved a lot of art from Korea to other countries. Moosehead's advice is sound. I have used FedEX before with no problems. FedEX and others also offer various insurance policies you can take advantage of. Taking photo's of the work before you send it via any carrier is a must. Make sure you date the photo, and if it's for an international competition, or an important piece you are worried about, print the photo's you take, put them in an envelope, and send them to yourself. The Post Office stamp and date is excellent evidence just in case there are legal problems dealing with damage. (Of course don't open the envelope)
There is also a company here in Korea which deals specifically in sending works of art internationally. I can't remember their name or number, but I have it somewhere. I have used them before without any issues.
Last option is to travel with the piece, and try to get it through as oversize personal luggage. I have done this without any problems. However, check with the airline before you try.
Good to hear there are some artists around...Good luck! |
