For this lesson, I found 18 problems from a worksheet on the internet. For the original lesson, you would cut out the strips of paper and give each student a problem and they would ask their partner for advice. This didn't work for me. I even made it simpler by giving only one student at each table a problem and having the group think of an answer. This didn't work. The poor students just sat there or worse, starting playing around. I needed to make an activity that required everyone to do something.

So I changed it, and the next two classes I taught went so much better. Everyone was working.

I wrote one problem on the whiteboard. Each student had to write the problem (and the question: "What would you do?" ) in their notebook and then talk to their group or work alone and come up with some advice and write that down. Then I went table by table and got some advice or I just gave the class the top 3 pieces of advice I could think of or that I heard from other classes. So even the poor students eventually had something to write down. Then we moved onto the next problem. I'm sure that once you read through the list you can easily think of more interesting problems for different ages. (My girlfriend is pregnant. My boyfriend is cheating on me. )

Good classes got through 13 problems while others got through only 9 problems. So this lesson will take 2 classes.
