I was at a Kyobo bookstore next to Jonggak station on Sunday where they have a Lonely Planet guide for the Trans-Siberian, if you're interested.

By the way, you can take a boat to Russia for as cheap as $130
In addition according to this website: http://grint.tos.ru/railway.htm it would be $200 from Vladivostok to Moscow. Takes 155 hours on the train - about 6 1/2 days. |

I was on it on the summer of 2002. There are a lot of options for stopovers and routes. (Moscow - Vladivostock or Moscow to Beijing 2 diferent routes, one via Mongolia, one going around it). I spent 1750 pounds and that included all my accommodation also. That means hotels or home stays for 3 nights in Moscow, 2 in Ekaterinburg, 1 in Irkutsk, 2 at Lake Baikal, 1 in Ulaan Ude, 2 in Ulaan Bator, 4 in the Gobi Desert and 1 in Beijing. I also took a bus from St Pete's to Moscow stopping in Novgorod and at a small lake but I think I paid extra for that. Check out monkeybusiness.com or monkeyshrine.com or russianexperience.co.uk |

I'm sold, forget SE Asia for blowing my final pay and severence, I'm hitting Russia/Europe and flying home from there.
How safe is it riding the rails across Russia?
How do you shower on the way?
How mana Visas did you require (transits from Mongolia, China, Russia, EU)?
Do you meet hot chicks for some anonymous travel sex? |

How safe is it riding the rails across Russia? Not a problem. I didn't feel unsafe anywhere I was depite the stories.
How do you shower on the way?If you don't get a stopover then you don't shower. I had to go a couple of days at the worst, because I was stopping frequently, but I don't believe there were any options if you were to go all the way without stopping. (7 days from Vladivostock I think)
How mana Visas did you require (transits from Mongolia, China, Russia, EU)? I had to get visas for al three. If you aren't going to stop in Mongolia you'll still need a transit visa to go across it from Beijing but there is a longer route from Beijing that goes around the east end of it.
Do you meet hot chicks for some anonymous travel sex?Yes. |
