My bf and I were watching the news and there are lots of ugly things going on that Koreans are pretty pissed about too. MBC did an entire segment about how Korea exports cars that are much safer to other countries. The cars they ship domestically would not and do not pass European or North American safety standards.

Also, the driver on one of the trains has been detained as he left his post and did next to nothing to help the passengers. This is not some judgement on anyone. I am just stating what my bf was explaining to me. There are alot of unanswered questions.

What happened in the second car is really scary. The fire got so hot so fast in the first car the air caught fire. Sort of a backdraft situation. The air got super-heated and combusted.

Like most countries it is only after a tragedy that things are fixed. Sad but true. This is not something that just happens here.

After seeing the video and watching the news with my bf I am a little shocked that people would sit calmly and talk on the phone while a subway car filled with smoke and so was my bf. There is a little something to be said for some panic. Often it produces unwitting heros. The guy who forces a door open or breaks windows so people can get out. I was completely flabbergasted seeing pictures of people sitting calmly in this smoke. Panic I could have understood but the stoicism was well I don't know how to explain it.

But like my bf says people just think different here. The people around them are not of any real concern so you have less of a "hero" factor in play. There is no..."Lets rally the troops and get the hell out of here?" Come on guys ...who's with me!? sort of thing. It is not part of the physche (sp?) NO McGyver factor either. I asked my bf what would you do ...he thought for a moment and said honestly probably the same thing.

I am NOT making judgements but people are raised differently and at least understanding it a little helps me understand why things happen and why people act the way they do here.

This is an unspeakable tragedy and I hope that these deaths are not in vain.

Yes, you are right that in the picture the lights were on, and I spoke on what information I had at that time. What I know now is that the passengers were thinking that the fire was on the platform and that the car would be moving out of the station, hence not much movement to get out of the car. Once the electricity was cut and the passengers new it was very serious, did my above comment have any merit. That is what I mean.

I just saw on cnn tht one of the conductors of one of the trains fled the scene without opening the doors leaving dozens to die.
Is this being reported in Korea? If so, are charges pending?

Thanks for the article.
That, however, states that he tried to move the train.
Cnn is reporting that he "fled the scene for safety, while leaving the doors locked".
The latest update I saw said that authorities are indeed "considering" charges.
Also, The authorities are investigating whether or not the subway authority tried to cover it up.

Well, Junganno station is finally up and running again...

I wonder when the second line will be?

About the station from the West end- I hope that it won't be too long, as I live right by the beginning of the line, but I had heard 2006. By then I will somewhere else, or dead, and in either case, not particularly interested in the subway line!

HK had a subway arson incident a day or two ago... don't think anyone died, though.
