Baseball is a very simple game that only requires a stick and a ball. We played rounders in elementary school..it is not very hard to play.
Like soccer however it is very hard to play at a high level.

most of the biggest soccer countries were not british colonies. soccer was spread by the merchant class.
You'll notice that if you look at the list of countries that play rugby and cricket, that they were the games spread to actual british colonies. |

That's the beauty of baseball. It looks simple, but the complexities run much deeper. That's why most baseball players don't perform their best until around the ages of 27-30. Frankly, it takes a good 20 years to really learn the intricacies of the game. Where as soccer players usually peak when they are between 21 and 23, which is the height of their physical prowess. By 30, when their physical abilities are on the wane, they are usually out of the game. If soccer was truly a game of skill we'd see a lot more 30, 35, or even 40 year old professional players. But no, it's pretty much a game for the young. When they can run fast and kick the ball hard. |

As I said both are hard to play at a high level.
The general consensus is that soccer players peak at 27-28. I'm not sure how you got 21-23 figure.
Soccer players don't play past 35 or so because there is a basic level of athleticism necessary that is just not there in baseball.
Both games require alot of skills. Just different kinds of skill. Also at the end of the day, great athleticism is a skill.
Your quote above could equally apply to soccer. It really frustrates me talking about this because i pay alot of attention to alot of sports. They all have deep complexities. You need to watch soccer a long time to appreciate the flow and intricacies of the game. The same applies to baseball. |

From what I've been seeing on many sports channels is that real football (ball and foot) is becoming more and more popular in the US, and is played by both girls and boys. |
Yeah, it's a great diversion for kids who are lacking the brain power for more complicated sports. Run and kick the ball. Can't get much simpler than that. |
You could, and you have, swing a bat cave man style. |
Any dolt can kick a ball. Try hitting a 90mph fastball. |
I admit that football isn't rocket science but to communicate with 10 other players on a team to get the ball into the back of the net takes more intelligence than swinging a bat and hitting fast moving ball. That's just basic animal reflexes. No skill really. |
Really? So you could hit a 90 mph fastball? Or a curve? You could turn a 6-4-3? You could throw a ball 130 feet from a crouch? You could lay down a squeeze? I didn't think so.
Soccer is a global game because it's so easy. Run. Kick the ball. Run. Kick the ball. |
So you could take on two defenders and curl a ball in the top corner from 25 years out? I doubt it. What is your point? You don't have one do you.
Any steroid pumped neanderthal can hit a ball with a stick.
But anyway, this thread is about whether or not baseball was invented in Britain. It was. It's a girls game. |

I've played soccer. I can run and kick the ball. I've even scored a few goals in my day. It's not that hard.
Have you ever swung a bat and hit a pitched ball? Have you ever caught a fly ball? Stolen a base? Pitched a ball across the plate?

Really? How come so very few do? And hitting the ball is only a small part of the game. See above.

No, baseball was invented in America. Derived from a British game. Which was undoubtedly derived from another game, from somewhere else. |

Derived from a British girls game.
Why do you call the "World Series" by that name when only two countries actually play? Seems a little arrogant doesn't it. |

All that means is that British birds are smarter than the blokes.
If you can teach an elephant and a dog to play soccer it ain't that hard.

Baseball. Try to keep up. Maybe you've taken too many headers. |

So you're the best out of two teams in the World Series. Wow.
Didn't you get beaten by Korea in the Olympics? |

One thing that struck me about Baseball as compared to cricket, is that players can specialise a lot more. I was told by an American friend that you have players who are specialist basemen and so on. In cricket the same 11 are used for the whole game, so you really need to be multiskilled. |

^ Kind of, but there's still a high degree of specialization within cricket. Obviously, there are batsmen and bowlers, but you also get all-rounders; those who are good with both bat and ball. Keeping wicket is also another area of specialization, and involves a undertaking similar to that of a catcher in baseball. Also, the rules in cricket are incredibly complexed. Understanding the different fielding positions is a skill in itself.
I'm not really a fan of cricket myself, although having said that, I appreciate it a lot more as I've gotten older, partly due to the rivalry between those nations that play it. Those that do follow cricket, whether they be from England, South Africa, India, Pakistan, the West Indies, New Zealand, Australia, Bangladesh, Zimbabwe to name the test playing nations, are generally pretty obsessed with it. The Windies and the Ozzies probably being the most. Cricket would never take off in the US on account of it being to long-winded, but if you ever get the opportunity to go and see an international test match between any of the countries I've mentioned, especially if it's an Ashes series (an exclusive test series between England and Australia) then you should go along and soak it up as it's a real party atmosphere. I don't care what anyone else may have to say about their own particular sports, Cricket fans are unlike any other group of sporting fans. Fact. |

What I really like about baseball is that it is a perfect game from a statistical point of view. Because the batter is isolated one on one versus the pitcher you can get a much better view on one players ability than in other sports. American football has such a short season, coupled with players being so dependent on their teammates that it is hard to isolate a player statistically.
Baseball also has some of the best journalism and literature written about it. I prefer american football writing though, I love their use of English. I read of a high school player being described as 'sudden'. such beautiful use of the language. Overall though the best is Irish paper's treatment of Gaelic Football. In the build up to the all ireland final day I can feel it welling up inside me each time i read the paper. Gaelic football is romanticized in a way other sports really aren't in Irish papers.
God I love sports. I'm staying up tonight to watch a slate of college football games. Anyone doing the same.
edit: forgot to say what i was going to say about cricket. i agree with bs dos about cricket. there is a lot of not so obvious specialisation. For example opening batter is a much different type of player than no.6. They need different temperaments and different skill sets. Your best pure batter would come at 3 or 4. Lots of different types of bowlers. I spent alot of time watching cricket when i was on summer hols from school..a game that definitely rewards repeated viewing. |

My first reaction to the title of this thread, which I'd seen on Yahoo a couple of days before it appeared here, was: Oh crap! Another insecure Brit!
A few years ago I taught with a Brit and he and his wife and I went out for drinks after work a few times. Their idea of a good night was to compare how much better cricket players were than baseball players and kept bringing up some cricket player who went to New York and batted against some pitcher way back when.
It was tiresome.
Games are games and in the end, that is all they are. To get nationalistic about games is to be childish. Can you get dorkier than, "We invented another country's game but we never played it"? |
