So I'd been under the impression that there were four Blue Note bars: New York, Tokyo, Nagoya, and Milan. That's what the Blue Note webpage even says. But today I randomly looked it up on Wikipedia, and it says there's one in Seoul. It seems to be in Jongno. Anybody been there? Is it not affiliated with the other ones? What's the deal?

Besides that, is there anywhere in Seoul with really good live jazz? Everyone else seems to enjoy getting randomly plastered, but I can only enjoy getting plastered in the presence of a vibraphone. Thanks!

There are some club websites at the bottom of the page. Hope this helps!

Cheers,

Hongdae has two jazz bars with live music: Palm and Magic Glow. Magic Glow is a bit away from the main strip while Palm is in the main area.

Apgujeong-dong has Once in a Blue Moon, which is pretty good but pricey.

Itaewon has All That Jazz.

There's a really good one in Hyewa/Daehangro, run by an old cool Korean guy, apparently since the '70's, or so the rumor mill has it. Can't remember the name of it, but it's off behind the McD's on the main drag in the basement. Anybody remember the name?

There's a pretty fantastic place between Hapjeong and Hongdae called Moonglow. The first gen. of Korean jazz players plays there every Thurs night--old dudes, and great. The owner is the pianist. He's a ham & definitely the least awesome of the musicians, but a good enough guy.

No cover, but drinks are a little spendy--part of the bar revenue goes to the musicians.

That is a really good place. It's not in the basement though. If you walk along the backstreets behind the KFC area, you'll hear it. It's kind of split between the first and second floor. Pretty noticeable. Don't remember the name either.

Once in a Blue Moon is also pretty nice. Good place to bring a date. Someone mentioned that they saw a musicians reading sheet music there. Well, the talent is usually local so it can be hit and miss. I've had a good time there both times.

BTW, the deal with the live jazz joints is that you don't pay cover, but you do have to pay more for drinks. Beers start at 8000 won, I believe. Gotta pay the band! It's worth it though because the digs are usually pretty nice.
