Why does this constitute evidence of "bias"?
Both Clinton and Bush were running for election at the end of Republican terms in office which had become deeply unpopular - in the latter case the most unpopular (and many would argue incompetent) President in living memory.
In those circumstances it is inevitable that people will be looking for significant change.
As much as McCain and Palin tried to display themselves as agents of change they belong to the incumbent party which presided over an economic melt-down and one of the most disasterous wars the country has ever been involved in.
Democracy allows the people an opportunity to periodically kick out unpopular or incompetent administrations - to me it was inevitable this would occur this year, if this didn't happen the US populace would implicitly be saying to the Republican Party "good job - carry on".
By your logic the press should be neutral and not reflect the mood of the electorate, which (as evidenced by the result) was in favour of a change of political party. Journalists are also voters, so you would expect that if a majority of the electorate was in favour of voting out the incumbents the majority of journalists should logically be of a similar view.
Personally, I think it's high time Republicans ceased whining about this electoral defeat given the debacle they have presided over during the past 12 months. Just accept it, assess where you went wrong, consider how you can assist the new administration with addressing and solving the issues and plan for 4 years from now. |
