Haven't seen any, but it is very good for potato salad and homemade soups and stews as well as a snack with peanut butter on it.

Of the many things absent, this is only one of many that I'd like to have.

Ever get an idea or feeling in mind for many days or weeks straight that something is missing and then you realize it's the little things like this?

I get it at Emart and Homeplus... It's extra leafy with smaller stalks, but at Homeplus they sell it with the leaves cut off.

You can also get celery at Lotte and Kim's Club.

Homeplus has it, along with E-mart and Nonghyup market.

So basically, all the big supermarkets. In Seoul, at least. I've even seen that dreaded herb that many Koreans dislike, cilantro (고수).

I can get it at E-amar-TTuuhh about 50% of the time. Before we came over we stocked up on some spices such as celery seed, and they work very will to provide the same flavor but lack the bulk and water. We use penzies spices for mailorder.

Oh no, it's not everywhere. Ditto. There's 2 Nonghyup stores in my town and ditto. There's no fresh veggies or fruit in these stores either; just whisky, Korean beer, water, out of date milk, and gross cellophane packaged shit. There's not Emart, Kim's Club, or Home Plus for many miles. We're talking multi hour bus rides each way!

I go to Gangneung about once a month to that Emart, but didn't see as much as I seen in Changwon, Busan, and Seoul stores. Taebaek Emart is even smaller with more slim pickings so I'm not going back there to shop.


These small towns and rural areas are rediculous when it comes to shopping. I don't understand how they can't have more when I'd see giant Wal*Mart super center stores in the smallest towns of only 10,000 people back home with no other industries than retail. You'd even have 2 McDonalds, Taco Bell, and everything in that small town, but in Korea, you only get a couple tiny sorry ass Nonghyup stores and several ajjuma candy and cigarette shops. Even in Europe, you had more shopping in small towns as I lived in a small Germany city of 60,000 people and there was a large store comparable to WalMart and real supermarkets. I just don't get the Koreans. Korea is weird. I could understand if this were a poor 3rd world country like Cambodia, you'd have to go to the capital to get anything outside of potatoes and carrots, but this is a more developed country with much more money flowing. If going to a 3rd world country, you definitely want to base yourself in the capital city.

If not in the capital city, then you're left packing as many groceries as you can carry for many miles or else you go without.

It's all about demand. How many people in your town want celery? There's you and.....? If more people wanted it, they'd take the trouble and have it delivered from Seoul or wherever.

On the other hand, I'm sure you can get a way better selection of mountain roots and fresh squid than we can here in Seoul!
