If you have any ideas/suggestions, please help...

I've just been asked to teach a winter camp for 3 weeks in January, so I'm in the process of making a schedule. I work at a public technical high school, so the students' English ability is extremely low (or non-existant.) I've been given complete freedom as to planning the camp. It will be from 8am-12pm M-F. My main concern in to find activities that they will find entertaining and fun. Most of the students are very unmotivated and it's usually difficult just to keep of them awake.

So far, I'm considering a sports day once a week (95% of the students are boys, so they would love this). We would learn the rules/vocabulary in English and then play. After the game, we could practice some verb forms related to the action. I'm also thinking about a movie day, board game day, and a few other projects.

My co-teacher suggested that I take them on some field trips around Seoul (she even suggested that I take them to Itaewon?!?!), but I have no idea about where to take a group of HS students.

If there are any ideas out there, I'd be grateful. Also, as usual, nobody knows about the number of students in the camp or if there will be any budget.

Thanks.

How bout a internet/cyberspace themed day? Teach them the good ol' ways of english acronyms and/or the interwebs. One good PC bang trip should do the trick. They might actually get to learn what the lil' Starcraft units are actually saying...

Food day? Everyone/you brings in food and eats it in class as you try to teach about tastes/methods of cooking.

If you're really ballin' take them to a theme park. Nothing like associated English with adjectives of fun and vocabulary descriptions of the rides.

Maybe spend a day or two teaching about some holidays like Easter. Bring in some boiled eggs and dye, color and hide 'em. Have them make their own Easter basket and fill it with grass. Then after the egg hunt go back to class and eat boiled eggs and candy and show them "The Easter Beagle."

There are some good projects on MES ENGLISH that would take a while to complete.

My high school is the same, in the respect that it is also a low level school with little interest in English unless it is a fun activity. For my summer camp we:

Designed superheroes (animation and posters) and watched a superhero movie. Followed up with design a 6 box cartoon animation.

Learned magic tricks and performed them in English.

Went bowling and spent a day at the beach playing games.

Had a cooking day. Describing vocabulary such as add, mix, stir, measure etc etc

Designed a theme park. Can use this prior to going on a field trip to Everland or somewhere similar.

Had a party. Could be used as design a party in the first week and use the winning idea for the last day of camp.

You can spend a month with some of these ideas from mes-english.

Thanks,

I'm going to have to start planning for my winter camps. I did things such as pictionary, jeoprody, music, food, movies for summer camps. I wanted to do something a littlre more fun and interesting for winter camps. I was thinking some kind of cooking class where we bake cookies or whatnot.

IMO

a cooking theme and maybe a theme day is a good one!

get them involved -possibly get something re hearsed and recorded
ie cooking styles/around the world. costume, ethnic foods etc
Greece ouzu russia vodka france wiine!
and keep it simple- do that, so.. ALL of them ( abilities) can get through it

good luck

It's a technical school. Their brains may be wired more towards practical applications. You could have them design their own theme based websites...or do it in small groups (2 or 3).

Conjugating verbs all day...

Well, if you hve a particularly miserable day outisde, take some sentences from your textbook and use the KABOOM game from the idea cookbook section. Boys against girls-I'd do it maybe into day 3 or 4 when the students are wanting to go home. It practices pronounciation, it's a subversive review and boys against girls if you're in a mixed school for those middle school teachers reading.

on a purely personal note, coteac her thinks she's being unpleasant having my winter leave not until late January-just like last year, working in Chinese New Year and not officaila vacation days is good!
