I have a professor who absolutely adores Nestle Kit Kat bars. So for a special christmas gift I came across many unusual flavors of Kit Kat candy bars, from a private blog of an American living in Japan. That got me to thinking, and I was able to find many of these flavors available thru Ebay. (Of course, incase he doesn't enjoy most of the candy, I will include the original flavor as well.)

Here is some of the flavors that I found to be particularly unusual:

Have any of you come across foods you would normally find in your home countries but adapted to fit the palate of Korea ?

The Wikipedia article on Kit Kats has a list of all the Japanese flavors. I tried a few of them while I was there, they were okay. Almost all of the special flavored Kit Kats are from Japan, for some reason. I don't know about Korea yet, but Japan REALLY likes limited-edition and seasonal food products.

I think of ice cream... you know red bean bars and green melon bars in Korea. I don't think I seen them in the states around here. I don't think curry bread ain't popular as well.

Mountain Dew and Skittles are different in Korea from what is sold in the United States.

Sweet potatoe on pizza.

Slice of pineapple on hamburger

Pickled chunks raddish with fried chicken

Chopped cabbage with ketchup and mayonaise with fried chicken.

Roast chicken with rice, chesnut ,and garlic stuffed in it.

Pumpkin gruel, Seafood gruel.

Bars that won't sell beer you a single customers who refuse to order a
15000 won bowl of fruit.

Ordering a big glass of milk with a bottle of whisky.

We can't forget the earliest Korean adaptation of western food, 부대찌개.

I'm not about to call sushi an American food, because we all know it's not (and that America adapts ethnic food to it's liking...) but the sushi rolls are very weird here in Korea compared to the ones I've had in America. At at the sushi boat counter in Lotte or Hyundai Department Store, I had a California roll with sauce that tasted like grape candy and another with green apple flavored sauce. Then one with a slice of cheese on top. It was sickening. Yeah... I can't wait to go back to America to eat some American sushi!

For the Skittles, the shell is thicker and the texture is a little different. Also, the flavors are a little off compared to the basic red bag sold in the States. As to the Mountain Dew, it isn't quite as sweet and is more carbonated and the taste overall is slightly different.
