this from the pulling stats out of your ass department.
Actually, students these days are fairly educated about it, although they only get about 6 months of 2 Saturdays a month per year starting from grade 4. It was adapted from the Canadian curriculum, although they spend less time on the subject, and skip over all the when kids have sex discussions. Starts with physiology and does cover STD's and birth control.
That said, yeah there sure are a lot of hookers round these parts! |

stuff like gonorrhea and chlamydia has symptoms and a pill takes care of the issue.
I'd bet the AIDS/HIV rate is extremely low. |
Syphilis shows symptoms in primary and secondary stages, too. If in remission, the condition can remain dormant for years or decades, but is still communicable. Watch for that shit.
Herp is survivable but is for life. *beep* that.
US military myth has it that there's some sort of super VD in Korea that when a soldier contracts it, (s)he is sent to some island off the Korean coast to live out his/her remaining days, never to return to the states. Anyone heard of such a thing?
Bogey - there are many of us mourning the passing of your last avatar. JSYK. |

1. Korean men do not like using condoms. 2. There is a large prostitution industry here. Just like anywhere in the world STDs (including HIV) are an issue here. If you are not protecting yourself EVERY TIME you have sex you are living dangerously.

Yep, that about sums it up. But there's one more thing: A lot of the Korean guys I've met have been to Thailand. Of course, going to Thailand does not = sex with hookers, but most of them specifically went to Pattaya. Yeah, look me in the eye and tell me that you went there for the scuba diving.
There was a statistic that 50% of the prostitutes in South East Asia are HIV positive. This statistic is about 10 years old, and Thailand has, in fact, cracked down on this problem. Still, you're playing with fire. |
The only time you see Koreans on walking street is when they're in a group. I always wondered where the Korean men play while in Thailand.
Apparently they're not well liked amoungst the usual places Nana plaza, Walking street. This mystery was later revealed on soi six. They go to Koreanized Karoke bars. I saw one of these places with a sign in Hanguel.
I can imagine they will royally ripped off at these places. They must pay extra for a *beep* who can sing" Man Nam" at the end of it. |

There are only two types of herpes - 1 & 2
If you've ever had a cold sore, you have herpes I. It's really common. Not necessarily an STD.
Herpes II is genital herpes. |

Herpes 1 is usually found on the mouth. Most Americans do have it, though it often has no symptoms. Herpes 2 is usually found on the genitals. "Genital herpes" is type 2.
BUT you can get type 1 on your genitals or type 2 on your mouth through direct contact with that herpes strain. If your mouth (or genitals) has herpes 1, then you can't get herpes 2 there, or vice versa. Herpes 2 is more severe.
Hepatits A is an acute condition that is spread through ingestion of feces or blood transfer. It goes away with hospital rest and then you're immune.
Hepatitis B is a chronic condition that never goes away. It can be transmitted through sex. Lots of Asians have it. If you're an American about my age (which I think you are, I'm 24) then you were probably vaccinated for this before college. |

Apparently around 95% of Koreans (or more) have Hep 1 because of all the sharing of foods. Doesn't surprise me.
Also, I asked my high school students about HIV, and most of them never even heard of it, or they would know AIDS but not HIV. Really sad, if you ask me.

You could have it, it could just be dormant. If you do there's nothing wrong with it, nothing terrible will happen to you. You may get a cold sore here and there but then it will go away and lie dormant again. You can get it from sharing saliva with someone who has an open sore, so kissing, food sharing, etc.
So I would say the most common 'STD' is Herpes 1 (although like mentioned before not really an STD) |

You get any kind of herpes from physical contact with herpes. You can get it from kissing, and since not everyone gets symptoms from it, you can get it from someone without a cold sore. And if you're infected, you might not ever get a cold sore, either. There's really no way of knowing. Herpes enters a "viral shedding" stage or something like that where herpes viruses come off of the area and that's when it's contagious. It's also possible to transfer herpes from one part of your own body to another. I've seen the statistic that 1 in 3 Americans has genital herpes. That shit is scary as hell. |

hrmm.. interesting.
I made sure I got my Hep A and B shots before going to Korea, just to be on the safe side. It would be beneficial to have HEP A and B shots even if you're not traveling actually..
Very true that the use of condoms is not promoted. My bf couldn't find any in supermarkets! only discovered some weird looking tiny boxes by the register at a convenience store.
Nothing compared to the lovely selection at home. forget choice.
If I were a man, I'd be using every form of contraception possible - not cos Koreans all have STDs... just common sense.
oh and..

Men who get HIV are either gay, drug users, or liars (generally). Thai men love to say they got it from a prostitute when they were really having sex with other men.
Sure there's a few unlucky percent who got it from vaginal intercourse, but that method is entirely inefficient. Blood is much better at spreading HIV, not vaginal fluid. |
