Episode 4, "Korea"
The story of Cullen Thomas, a university graduate from New York who was caught smuggling drugs into South Korea when he visited the country for a short stint as a teacher. He was sentenced to three and a half years, and had to endure the atrocious conditions of two Korean prisons, including a cell so small he could not extend his arms above his head and a toilet that did not flush.

| Just curious, but are we supposed to feel sorry for the guy for getting caught? I would not want to be in that cell, but that's about where my sympathy ends... |

| Watched it. He wasn't very bright was he? Rather greedy too. |

| As long as you're not claustrophobic, it doesn't sound like that awful of a cell. I've only heard good things about Korean prison. One of my friends spent a few months in one, and he said the food was so good he gained weight. Of course he was a Korean, but then again there really doesn't seem to be all that much of a gang problem in Korean prisons. |

| If he didn't get raped then it's probably better than a US prison. |

He actually released a book about his experiences a few years ago...somewhat decent but it dragged and I skipped to the end....
Basically, it sounded 20x times more boring than a normal prison...about 20x safer than a US prison.
He was about as stupid as they come....they gave him the option of accepting the package of hash he ordered via mail at the post office....which looked as though it has been torn open and re-closed......which he said "hmmm....I like stupid risks"....he also was teaching on a tourist visa at the time which made him look like a smuggler in the eyes of the police. |

Saw it.
Even though it was back in the early 90's, I don't think much would have changed.
Yeah, he was stupid for choosing Korea as the country to smuggle drugs into. There are a lot easier options with less severe sentences.
I liked the part where he tried to tell the Korean custom cops that the hash was all for personal use. To avoid a selling charge. So he told him that he would put 12 grams into a cup of tea etc!! |

I wonder how different that was to his apartment. |
