where did you pull that out from??

He probably did some actual research into the transmission of HIV rather than swallowing the politically correct BS that is intended to "democratize" AIDS. Liberal groups want to say everyone is at risk so gays aren't stigmatized, and Christian groups hate sex so they like to say everyone is at risk unless you're married and monogamous

The truth is better than each of those approaches. Letting people who are at higher risk know their actual risk level is important to helping them prevent the disease. Homosexual anal to anal intercourse is one of the most efficient methods of spreading HIV, as are blood transfusions and sharing needles.

In most cases of having multiple partners, epidemiologists like Fumento figured that you are less likely to get HIV from having a new partner 1 time per week than having serial monogamous relationships with more frequent sex--in the case of heterosexuals.

Heterosexual men are even more lucky than women. We don't receive cuts on the *beep*, like women often do in the vagina, so we are at the lowest risk of getting HIV compared to any group. It is extremely unlikely that we'll get it, because of how it transmits itself.

Having another STD that creates sores increases a heterosexual male's risk though.

hrmm.. interesting.

I made sure I got my Hep A and B shots before going to Korea, just to be on the safe side. It would be beneficial to have HEP A and B shots even if you're not traveling actually..

Very true that the use of condoms is not promoted. My bf couldn't find any in supermarkets! only discovered some weird looking tiny boxes by the register at a convenience store.

Nothing compared to the lovely selection at home. forget choice.

If I were a man, I'd be using every form of contraception possible - not cos Koreans all have STDs... just common sense.

oh and..

some perspective is needed.

during the height of the AIDS scare and following the Magic Johnson revelation - public health services basically promoted the "grave danger" in heterosexual sex - vis a vis HIV.

of course, this was also very POLITICALLY correct, this way you couldn't say it was a "gay disease".

they basically equated the risks... for a very long time.

but with the passage of time, the TRUTH eventually came out.

and the TRUTH is that a it is in fact quite "difficult" for a man to get HIV even when barebacking with an infected female partner (there are adjustments within this, for example - circumcised vs not circumised)

but FACT is that the "receiver" is TWICE as much at risk as the "giver", fairly or not, the woman is far more at risk when copulating with a male via vaginal intercourse.

anal intercourse is especially risky for the "receiver", as the nature of the act and the tissue involved means the receiver is prone to tissue tears, abrasions, etc giving the virus a much easier pathway.

bottom line? I think it's been established that if the risk for a guy catching AIDS/HIV when having vaginal intercourse with an infected female is about 1 in 500 give or take a few.

now, is that risky? or can we "quantify" how risky that is?

well, I suppose that calculation is up to you. Given the gravity of the the odds going against you, it certainly makes it a headscratcher.

I want a reference! Razz

hrmm.. but i see your point. i'll just ignore the percentage who have sores on their *beep*.

So.. would it be safe to conclude that the HIV that is becoming a problem in Africa was probably started by bi-sexual male individuals?

it's a serious question. HIV in Africa is a huge problem.. kids are born with HIV. I just wonder where it all came from.

Given that there are few infected females in this country, and that you can screen females by finding out if they're in at risk groups (if they have ever used IV drugs or had sex with bisexual men), the risks have to be really low. Afterall, the risk of getting HIV with a non-infected woman is 0%. You would have to go through many women before finding an infected person who doesn't obviously use drugs, and then the odds are still 500 to 1 depending on factors like her viral load. I don't know how to calculate the statistics exactly, but I do know most of the people with HIV are men in developed countries, which means you're unlikely to come across an infected woman anyways. It stays in the gay or drug using community with the exception of bisexuals occasionally spreading it to their female partners.

In Africa, HIV spread very quickly in the beginning. There was no blood transfusion screening, and the reuse of needles in many countries. This might seem absurd, but you have to realize how poor Africa really is. They did reuse needles and for years they were distributing HIV infected blood transfusions in many countries.

There was a read somewhere on Daves about how the numbers for HIV are inflated in Africa. They don't do an HIV test because it isn't affordable in Africa in large numbers--they do an indirect immune test and tuberculosis and other diseases can cause a false positive result.

(Tuberculosis is a horrible disease that I wish people would spend 1/10th the money on HIV to eradicate, because we already have a cure. It is also spread through no fault of one's own, it's airborn).

Some epidemiologists have theorized the continual spread of HIV in Africa is due to the backward treatment and outlook on gays. Most countries pronounce "they are no gays here." Gay men can be killed in Africa for being gay, even by the governments. By now you should no Africa is not the most tolerant or civilized place in the world. This means gay men get married and then have sex with other men in secret almost all of the time. This infects their wife and their families. It's different in developed and liberalized countries where gay men generally only have sex with gay men.

There are also different attitudes towards sex and HIV. Entire African nations and leaders do not believe HIV and AIDS exist at all. Current presidents of African countries deny the existence of AIDS. They believe its a Western conspiracy to lower African birthrates. They discourage the use of condoms because of this fact. You can also read of tribes that are ruled by mystic witch doctors, who encourage young men to have sex with a virgin if they get sick, in order to cure themselves of the illness.

As I mentioned before, having another STD increases the chances of spreading HIV. Many Africans cannot afford the drugs or tests for other STDs. This allows them to transmit the disease more efficiently.

In a way I agree with the deniers: Africa doesn't really have an AIDS problem. It has a cultural, scientific, and dictatorship problem. Once the people accept science, liberalism, and constitutional governments, their HIV problem will subside along with every other problem they have there.

and if I were to bet on the most common std, common sense says the herp.

stuff like gonorrhea and chlamydia has symptoms and a pill takes care of the issue.

I'd bet the AIDS/HIV rate is extremely low.

Syphilis shows symptoms in primary and secondary stages, too. If in remission, the condition can remain dormant for years or decades, but is still communicable. Watch for that shit.

Herp is survivable but is for life. *beep* that.

US military myth has it that there's some sort of super VD in Korea that when a soldier contracts it, (s)he is sent to some island off the Korean coast to live out his/her remaining days, never to return to the states. Anyone heard of such a thing?

Bogey - there are many of us mourning the passing of your last avatar. JSYK.

it didn't die.. it was just retired... ahemm.. temporarily Smile

maybe I'll bring it back soon. haha

syphilis if not caught early on can go into remission with no symptoms even as it's kiilling your nervous system at the same time. That said. I think syph tests are a part of every broad blood test.

hsv1, aka cold sore is not an STD. and 90% of people have it.
hsv2, aka genital herpes is an STD but it's not 33% of people, it's more close to around 18-20%. Also, common sense tells you that despite 'asymptomatic shedding" and even condoms not being foolproof, the infection of this virus also isn't "that" easy - (as most people will obviously not have sex during a breakout) - or else that 20% would skyrocket in percentages very rapidly up to 50% and beyond.
btw.. I've read that it's now possible to get hsv1 strain in your genital area (since they're technically the same thing, just different location), and it's basically same as hsv2, except "milder".

HPV is perhaps the most common here, because most people don't realize they have it until they get married and choose to have children. It's hard to detect on both males and females.

One of my friends has HPV-18 and has been going to the hospital often for treatment. She says she's never had sex and her doctor told her she caught it from a public toilet seat, neither of which could be possible. I get the impression that the Korean public is misinformed because the doctors here are undereducated about sexually transmitted diseases.

I got crabs during my stint in Korea. When I got them I was dating a girl with whom I was faithful. I thought I had sure proof she was cheating on me. I called her over to my place that night and did some investigative work. She was totally clean. When I went to the doctor he said it was fairly common in Korea to catch crabs at public saunas and bathhouses, or even public restrooms.

My friend got hepatitis A (i think it was A)and he lost so much weight you couldn't even tell it was him. He got it from Chinese food at the mall food court, thank god I got sbarro pizza!!

awesome! it would be like a smelly kiss of sorts... didn't know that one was in their arsenal.

hep a..... in my 5 years here, i can count on my fingers the number of men i have seen wash their hands after using the washroom.

the true incidence of warts and the herp is sickening. odds are you've got one, the other or both. just be happy if you're asymptomatic. if you've had sex with someone who has had sex and you have put your lips on other lips, or where other lips have recently been, the odds are that you were exposed... now go stress about it. Smile
i jest... but, seriously... you've got it... Razz
no... seriously.

My ex said she had caught the clap once in college. Long before she started dating me, thankfully, but there are definitely things floating around. Proceed safely.

The CDC reports that MSM (men who have sex with men) are at the highest risk of contracting HIV. Source located here: http://www.cdc.gov/vitalsigns/HIVtesting/LatestFindings.html

The CDC also reports that 80% of adults over the age of 40 have some degree of herpes, which isn't preposterous, considering that the simple act of sharing a drink can spread it.

YOu all MUST be aware of Hepatitis A in this counry as well.
It is a BIG problem!!!!!!!!!! My brother-in-law has had it for years--yet failed to inform any of us of this important fact. I was
just eating out of the same damn bowl as him two weeks ago (prior to his hospitalization).
If you haven't been vaccinated DO IT!!!!!!!
If you have, make sure you are up-to date--it does need boosters.

I've been in need of my booster for a few years, thinking it isn't a problem; but IT IS.

Don't buy into this B.S. of Korea being a modern "Hub of Asia"
just because it has had a facelift.

Be careful please! If your K. work-mate gets p'd off because you don't want to share the same glass or eat from the same bowl, f'em!

Thank you twinrix. Was smart enough to get this done before I arrived in the Land of Morning Calm.

So, now I can slurp out of the same bowl, Twaeji style....yee haw!!!

Riiiigggghhhhtt....

Men who get HIV are either gay, drug users, or liars (generally). Thai men love to say they got it from a prostitute when they were really having sex with other men.

Sure there's a few unlucky percent who got it from vaginal intercourse, but that method is entirely inefficient. Blood is much better at spreading HIV, not vaginal fluid.
