I study Korean at a Hagwon that is basically for Japanese students. They are happy to have me; wouldn't be much good to come to Seoul and study with only other Japanese. I am intermediate level now and I can keep up in grammar, vocabulary, even speaking, but am falling farther and farther behind in listening skills. It seems the Japanese students all love to watch these Korean "dramas" and I am not the least bit interested in young love or metrosexual fashions. I try watching news, but can't really understand more than a word or two. I have a few friends who speak Korean to me, but I have to ask them to repeat many sentences.
Does anyone know any Korean language TV that you find somewhat entertaining and easy to understand? Maybe a children's show? Maybe something downloadable from the internet? I'm not really looking for something talking in English "about" Korean, something in basic Korean language would be more helpful.
Thanks, Drew

I would love to find something along these lines as well, but so far...*_*

Sometimes I try watching the program with all the foreign girls speaking Korean (sorry, I don't know the name), but it's way too fast and too advanced most of the time.

Listening is just one of those skills that will have to develop over. There are a lot of grammar concepts and vocabulary that simply are not covered in the elementary Korean books. The best thing you can do is find a local Korean restaurant where the waitresses will talk to you in Korean and practice speaking with them about different topics.

The key to mastering the listening part is to stay on top of the vocabulary and grammar. Because of the complexity in the vocabulary and grammar, it will take a couple years before you can understand what's on Korean TV. I can suggest a few things to help on your listening skills besides the grammar tapes with your textbook.

The first thing you might want to check out is the TV news articles at daum and naver since they have both the video news reports and hangeul transcripts with them. If you go that route, start with short news articles and spend several days reviewing the words on notecards.

A second thing to check out is the Korean Bible online at http://www.holybible.or.kr or http://www.c3tv.com/ since they have the audio recordings for it. If you go to a Korean Church and the minister doesn't speak too fast, reading the Korean New Testament will help you understand sermons. It's not the most practical for everyday conversations, but if you can understand a Korean sermon, that is a sign of progress.
