If "nice" means a belief that people can't take care of themselves and need a paternalistic government to limit their freedoms and personal liberties in the process, then I guess so.

I'd rather put stock into someone who holds that people are basically rational, capable beings who should be free to pursue their standard of The Good, without interfering in anyone else's pursuit or being interfered with.

But hey, that's me. Cool

In the US, liberal means communist. In Canada, liberal means centrist who likes voting for shipping magnates.

You didn't specify which; critical, progressive or neo. Either way, they're all variations of the same theme; scientific fundamentalism coupled with hedonistic individualism. Rule by rules rather than rule by men.

Liberals are all well 'n' good until you offer some dissent on a central dogma. Oh Bush wasn't behind 9/11, the free market is a good thing, welfare might be too generous, etc. and then you're the devil.

No. Conservatives can be the nicest people in the world. Go down to the south of America and they will invite you into their home on a whim, cook for you and give you money if you need it (even if they know you will never be back). People are people. It's the group itself that becomes bad. Get conservatives together, and you get lynchings (or today's version of a lynching).

And then there is the thought that liberals giving free handouts to people are actually meaner than conservatives because you are not actually helping the person but making things worse.

I am fairly liberal, but even liberals have their problems. I think it doesn't matter on what end you are, if you are extreme, you suck.

I miss the days when Liberal or Conservative, we left our differences at the border. Outside of the U.S. we where all American. Lost that somewhere in the eighties I think.

I can have a rational discussion on just about any divisive topic, but when you start to accuse the U.S. of being a terrorist state, I have to say rationality is no longer in play.

I'm not sure where that whole line of attack came from. Perhaps Conservatives started it with labeling Liberals as Communists or Socialists and it is a reactionary thing, I don't know where it started, but it sure as hell ends a lot of discussions.

Which is unfortunate because discussion is what we need, but becoming harder to find the more we need it.

I've met plenty of conservatives who, despite their political handicap, were realy nice people. I've met a few liberal jerks as well.

Liberals are non-thinking morons who spout the party line. Watch how they act when you disagree or debunk their lefty bullshit!

There are some great old episodes of "Crossfire" on youtube if you look around. I like the Frank Zappa episode:
