In response to Captain Corea's thread:
http://forums.eslcafe.com/korea/viewtopic.php?t=138841&start=0
Although I consider myself a considerate smoker, there's just no pleasing some non-smokers. These ANS' (Agressive Non-Smokers) often go out of their way to look for opportunities to put down smokers, criticize them and basically give themselves license to be rude and obnoxious.
I'm told I have a choice in quitting smoking or not. Great. That's an awesome choice, and one that I'm makingby continuing to smoke. It's legal, it's government-endorsed through taxes, and it's widely available at very cheap prices.
You wanna be angry at someome? Be angry that your country/government not only allows it to happen, but generates billions of dollars by taxing it.
You wanna give a piece of your mind to a smoker outside a building? Instead, tell the building management that you insist they provide an area for smokers to smoke and properly dispose of the butts.
You wanna get angry in a bar because there's too much smoke? Talk to the bar owner and tell him you won't be coming back to his/her popular establishment because of your health concerns.
I'm totally fed up of overly righteous people who feel it's ok to be rude and condescing to a smoker who is doing nothing unlawful. I have a right to smoke, dammit, and us smokers aren't going to magically disappear until governments ban cigarettes.
OK, rant over. |

Does this honestly deserve a new thread? Were you feeling that you were not being heard in the other thread?
But ok, I'll bite.
Are 'non-smokers generally too righteous'?
Well, depending on how you define that. When you mean too righteous, Are you meaning this definition?:
http://dictionary.weather.net/dictionary/righteous
Quote: |
1: acting in accord with divine or moral law : free from guilt or sin
2 a: morally right or justifiable <a righteous decision> b: arising from an outraged sense of justice or morality <righteous indignation> |
If so, I'd have to say that from my experiences, you're way off base.
While I suppose some would take 'non-smoking' to biblical proportions, I generally look at it in a self-preservation sense.
I know first hand how dangerous smoking is, and I'd love it if it was removed from my life.
It's not religious to me.
It's not a moral thing.
It's simply trying to eliminate dangers from my life.
Does that answer your question OP? |

It depends. I always wash after one, but some people have wierd over-sensitive noses - I think they must be deformed in that way kind of dog-like. |

So basically you're saying 'don't complain to me, complain to building/bar management.'
It's now their fault for letting you smoke, not your fault for smoking. |

Sounds like an "it's not me response."
I will be glad the day when they DO (and they will) ban smoking. Let's just hope it is sooner better than later. |

i dont understand how ppl can be addicted to smoking, I smoked for 3 months while in EUrope, came back to canada, havent smoked one since. People who are addicted to cigs are weak and have only their lack of discipline to blame. Haul your socks up and quit crying |

The only thing worse than a whiney non smoker is a preachy ex-smoker... no one likes a quitter!
The born again "I have walked into the light... let me be your shepherd" angle is probably the most annoying thing a quitter can do.
People may be weak, cigarettes are not... most people can't stop because they can't consciously figure out why they need to smoke or why they think they like smoking...and other people just love smoke, smoking, and everything to do with it.
Smoking will never be banned outright; it is too effective at population control. |

I totally disagree with banning smoking in pubs (US). It's not like they're running health clubs. In public places, open to all, smoking should be banned. The problem I have with smoking is that smoke has no regard for No Smoking Signs and basically putrefies everything it comes into contact with. When I choose to go into a pub, I can choose to leave when the smoking gets too bad. |

Almost never. This thread is stupid. I have met one who actually attacked someone for saying they were a smoker, but other than that I have only ever seen non-smokers attack smokers when it affected them in some way. Understand one thing, you do NOT have the right to smoke anywhere near me in any public place. |

All true if you live in Korea or China, but in the US it's anything but cheap.
When I went back to visit this past summer I saw that one pack cost around $8.00; a store had a no-name brand on sale for $6.75.
I don't know about you, but with taxes that would get anyone to stop smoking. |

Not that I'm defending smoking because it's a filthy habit that I myself indulge in, but this is flagrantly not true, at least in this country. |

I did mean back home. Though that should be universal. |
