I took a few photos when I was at an amusement park in Pyongyang, including a very old rollercoaster that was extremely scary to ride (and it had nothing to do with the speed (or lack of) of it).

There's a few more photos in the set of the rollercoaster and amusement park.

Nice work. How much access did you have, and did they stop you from taking any pictures?

At the amusement park, as with most places, you're entitled to take as many photos as you like. The only place that springs to mind where I couldn't take photos was inside Kim-Il Sung's mausoleum (Kumsusan Memorial Palace).

Even on the Northern side of the DMZ was fine.

Access was fairly broad but you needed to be escorted at all times.

For the most part, it was a warm, inviting atmosphere.

Was the amusement park a regular part of the tour, or did you have to ask to be taken there or anything?

It was part of the regular tour. Sadly, the Ferris wheel wasn't working, nor the merry-go-round.

I did manage to wonder off by myself and talk to an ahjumma who was selling fruit juice (heavily watered down ones). She said she was very happy to see so many foreigners coming to the park and they had done some work making the place work again. My Korean wasnt so good at the time, but thats what I could work out.

I know one of the guys had requested to meet a North Korean soccer player, and they organised that for him. Otherwise, the 10 or so days were there was all planned out.

Yeah, I've read a lot about trips to Pyongyang, but this is the first I've heard of the amusement park. My main goal right now is to somehow get access into Ryugyong Hotel, with permission, although that seems impossible at the moment.

I heard, although I cannot find my source, that work has started on the Ryugyong Hotel again. Really, from what I saw and I have some good photo of the exterior, its just a hollow building with nothing inside. Kind of like being in a new, unfinished building. Lots of cement to see. Smile

Sounds like my sort of thing.

I've been following the news about the reconstruction, but it may just be for installing antennae on the roof.

I think I read some place they're trying to get foreign investors to finish the project but then I also read the whole building is made from substandard concrete and probably needs to simply be torn down.
