| There's something embarrassing about seeing a Korean guy all blinged up like a gangsta rapper who's exclusively singing songs about his best girl. |

| this poster always reminds me of those guys you see in the drivers-ed vidoes in highschool. You know the ones where the guys get in motorcycle accidents and lose half their brain. |

First of all it's obvious some of you don't even understand Korean music. You're quick to automatically throw them into ghetto-thug-wannabe-poser-rappers. Which is largely UNTRUE for most Korean hip hop. Like i mentioned in the other thread there ARE some that are pathetic posers - 1TYM is guilty as charged.
But most are not even RAP, it's hip hop. Know the fucking difference. Also Korea is making their own unique fusion of hip hop+dance which is nothing LIKE American rap. Groups like Epik High, Dynamic Duo, Mighty Mouth, Wheesung, DT, MC Mong, MC Sniper are not rapping but doing a fusion of dance+hip hop or what i call a "poppy-hip hop". |

Everytime I see a sideways hat wearing, baggy pants, bling pimp'n Korean trying to act like he is a G I have to laugh a little.
I have one student in my class whose English name is Gangsta. He's the symbol of why no one takes Korean RAP seriously. Koreans are not hardcore in their hip hop/rap environment. Street cred in Korea is rubbing up against some waegookin' *beep* while he's passed out at the jim jill bong under the Hamilton.
I'm all for Korean's expressing themselves in dance/hip hop. Just don't claim to be a 'G' when the only set you know came from the McD and BK menu. |

Any Korean pop or hiphop music that gets regular air time on TV sucks.
similar to how MTV sucks in the states.
Hello OP, you sound so damn desperate. Why do you need approval from others to enjoy your music? |

one of my favorite hiphop lyrics ever heard in korean - no word of a lie... the whole rap was in korean and interspersed with "budda-budda budda APKUJEONG.... budda-budda-budda GANGNAM!"
but the chorus went "i'm gonna keep thuggin' till my parents come GET ME!"
like.. can you imagine that?
"beep!"
"uh, sorry guys - hold my piece, my moms just rollled up. i have hagwon in the morning. entrance exams'nshit."
"yeaaah kiggga, word."
i'm sure some of it's good but the lion's share of it is fakeass crap with bad flow. epik fail. |

In other words, it's basically pop music with a few talkie parts thrown in and a couple other cliched trappings of black music, which they probably don't even acknowledge as black music. |

If that's what you call hip hop...like i SAID it's a fusion. It's not thug rap but it's not pop music with a few talkie parts in it either. I'd say it's something like Korean spoken word on a melodic harmony and driving beats. They typically feature a vocal singer for the chorus/refrains which is not much different than American hip hop. And before you start labeling me as a Korean apologist or some shit, i totally agree with you about the Korean "thug wannabes" that go around acting Black and all hard. It's hilarious and pathetic...happens in the states too though. The thugwannabe's in wife-beaters that do donuts in the parking lot, talk trash and bump their shitty 12" subs until their cars vibrate...and honestly, i think the way black rappers in the states dress is ridiculous as well.
Examples of Dance+Hip Hop fusion:
I have props for these guys because they're not trying to be hard, and thuggish. The style IS more light because they aren't talking about drugs, gangs, shootings, and living in the ghettos listening to crack whores screaming all night. Some of you guys seem like you're determined to bash Korean anything. Try listening to some of these with a bit of open mind.
P.S. A lot of idiots start bitching when they think they're saying "nigga" in their rap but it's not.
Epik High - Tablo is a Stanford grad, English Lit major, really smart guy, humble too.

Oh yeah, I heard that "Niga" song playing in a Buy the Way once. It's funny, and I bet it was intentional.
What, then, is the difference between all of this hip-hop and mainstream Korean pop? |
