North Korea has ordered the land border with S. Korea closed. That would make the S. Korean factories in Kaesong rather hard to operate I'd imagine. I can't imagine they'll be doing Berlin Airlift style flights there.

I would have thought the 30,000 N. Koreans employed there provided rather a lot of much needed hard currency for the N Koreans. I guess they don't think they need it that much though.

They'll just start sending the goods those factories produce in the other direction to China.

Ditto... glad its closing.

It's been a bargaining chip for the North, used against those who want to save face to keep it from failing.

Whilst we often criticise S. Korean management practices and productivity here, I strongly suspect that if these factories switch to N. Korean management production and quality will plumit. Furthermore China can produce its own cheap crap, it doesn't need to import any from N. Korea.

Maybe Kim Jong-Il is no longer in power or even alive. He was a lot of things, but he understood how to get "money for nothing" from SKorea, the UN, the USA, and places like Gaesong.

Yeah all he would do is press take the key from his nuclear basketball and aim some missile into the ocean. Then BAM! relief aid and monetary concessions.

Does that mean those over priced but enticing day trips to the North are off the itinerary then?
