I havn't been to emart yet, but there is one in Sokcho. I'm planning on going there this weekend to outfit my new apartment. I will need some obvious things (plates,bowls,detergent,etc.). It got me thinking though, what are some necessities you all bought for your place? I was thinking a drying rack and a French press?

Any suggestions? THANKS! Komopsumnida!

If you can try finding one of the local markets....emart is expensive with some things...

Also check craigslist for used items before blowing a load at emart.

Also, before you go blowing a small fortune on things like I did, see if your school has a stipend set aside for your apartment things... My elementary school had 300k on their school credit card for me to spend on stuff, but didn't tell me until after I had bought things like a drying rack, alarm clock, garbage can, etc etc... (Though it did get me a nice vacuum, toaster oven and a bunch of other random stuff - laundry hamper, dish cloths, etc etc)

Egrog...that sounds like your 300k 'settlement money' which is meant to be given to you in cash when you arrive. Or was it extra?

I would buy some of those cute little pastel'd writing pads, with 100 of the same page that say: "THINGS TO BUY," or even more to the point "SHOPPING LIST."

You might as well get another one that says: "THINGS TO DO." while you're at it.

Best of luck. Do Not get confused by the girls in the bakery section!

We're all behind you on this one!

What I've gotten a lot of use out of:

Electric Blanket
Electric Kettle
Vacuum cleaner
Thermos, which I use to make soups and porridges.

I did without the rice cooker because I can make it in a pot.

You can also make it in a microwave. 1 cup rice, 2 cups water. Put it in a big microwave safe bowl. Microwave for 20 min on high then 15 min on medium. Saves you from having to stand over the pot and stir.

Make sure you pick up a bottle of their Scottish single malts...they now have two that are supposedly quite nice. The Singleton is only 60,000.

Furnishing the apartment? Skip E-Mart. In Korea there is a chain of dollar stores "Daisco" (forget what the name is in hangel). Go there to buy cheap, cheap, dishes and stuff for the apartment. Someone help me with the name. A lot of the stuff is pretty cool and best part is if it breaks ...nothing lost.

I suppose you are not a rice fan. When cooking rice, there is no reason to stand over the pot and stir. In fact, you should not take the lid off of the pot while it is cooking.....sigh.... I wonder about the quality of the rice you are cooking.
