I'm specifically in gangnam_gu, but I do travel a bit around the city, especially to the Itaewon area. I'm looking for a place to get a haircut (for a man) that's not overly expensive, nor crappy in the work they do. I've heard a few horror stories already about this.

I don't know what theyr'e charging these days, but there used to be a place above Coffee Bean in Itaewon. There is a also a lady at the bottom of the alley behind outback steakhouse in Itaewon. She doesn't speak English, but she is very kind. Her price is 8,000 won, if memory serves. It's best to go early in the week. She tends to like to use the electric razor to trim the sides quickly... a lot of people might not like that.

Since I'm looking for a more classical cut, and not the latest, most fashionable Korean cut, I look for out-of-the-way places. The same strategy works for buying groceries at the corner mini-marts -- the more out of the way and darker the lighting, the better the prices. When it comes to getting your hair cut (and shampoo and head massage), you can't beat the middle-aged hair stylists who own their own shop and are generally are being beat out by the big shops. Throw some business their way, and you'll get a detail-oriented, patient hair stylist with a lot of time on her hands who is willing to make you look fantastic. If you're like me, you'll feel guilty for only paying 5000 won for the cut+massage+shampoo, and you'll force her to accept the tip. She deserves it, and it keeps her in business.
