Hi all,
I've got an interview at a university in Seoul next week and I've been told I will have to give a teaching demonstration afterwards.
Any help/lesson ideas/tips would be very gratefully accepted.
Thank you. |

If you have to ask a message board 75% full of yahoos and monkeys, you may not be ready to teach at a university level.
You should really be studying up on the web and in teaching books. Use your creativity from there.
Now if you are asking for Korea-specific tidbits, that's different. In that case, smile, make your lesson applicable to the real world and be likable. |

What a classy guy you are. Believe it or not, even yahoos and monkeys have the occassional pearl of wisdom....... from time to time.

Been there done that. The whole point of this board is to share ideas. As an instructor with previous teacher training and 5 years of experience I firmly believe that I will always be learning new ideas/techniques and improving my skills. You on the other hand seem to be quite the know it all.
Anyway getting back on topic, any help or shared experiences from others are most welcome.
Thanks. |

You forgot drunk.
But in all seriousness, some specifics (like what you are aiming for in a demonstration lesson or what level of uni/students you are aiming for) help readers give you advice. Otherwise you get yahoos, monkeys and drunks giving stale advice that you already know. |

Come in with a lesson aimed at a specific student level, i.e., intermediate university students.
Teach it enthusiastically. Do a language based lesson. Cover it all.
In the interview, talk about rubrics, the importance of lesson plans, lesson teaching theorums and the rheotric of teaching.... Go over their heads, but not too much. The Korean education system is in the 19th century.
It's really not that hard.
I know a Candian schizophrenic with a degree from some uni in the canadia with a BA. She landed a uni job with no problem. Her uni is famous for giving degrees to inmates.... no joke. Her idea of a lesson is singing songs from the 60's.
Dress nice and don't stutter. You'll get the job. |

You might want to find out if the school uses a textbook, if they do base your lesson around that. If they don't, you might want to find out if their program has any objectives, again if they do base your lesson around that. |

Sorry, but I have to side with the drunken Bibbitibop on this one. The OP just comes out and asks for a handout without presenting their ideas or insights first. They therefore come across as someone who has no idea what they should be doing in an interview, let alone a university position.
So the OP has experience? Why not say so, along with some of the lessons or ideas already in hand? I know the purpose of the board is to share ideas and teaching strategies. Fine, but sharing is a two way street, and is often the case here, highly UNqualified people are coasting into jobs for which they are not prepared. To tread water and collect their pay cheques and vacation time, they sponge. Sponging is not sharing. |

Hi withnail. Really really appreciate your help. Thanks a lot. As for sponging? I have a good idea what I am gonna do.....and (withnail) if you pm me your e-mail address I will show you my ideas for the lesson. Thanks PRagic for the insults....(but actually I am well prepared....just thought I'd ask for advice that's all...sorry for my crimes.)
Anyway I was gonna post a full summary of my interview/teaching demo at the university next week...in order to help others in the future...but thanks to all of the insults I don't think I will bother now.

My uni made me do a teaching demonstration, but gave me the materials they wanted me to use. I had to give it in front of a group of 5 or 6 Korean professors.
I teach a job interview course at my univ., and am gathering information for a book on the subject (from a Korean student angle). One thing I can suggest is that you expect to be greeted by a group, just like I was. Be assertive and plan to introduce yourself quickly to everyone. Go around the table and shake their hands. Really take charge. If you don't, they will get the impression that you can't handle yourself in the classroom.
My students often have interviews with international companies, and many of them follow this same pattern... often, you aren't even introduced to anyone (during the interview). They just let you walk into the room blind and see how you will react. They are testing you to see how you handle yourself. This is where you MUST take control of the situation, begin introductions, and start right into the presentation afterwards. If they don't want you to begin the presentation yet, they will let you know.
Pretend they are a class of students. |

so now you're going to demonstrate your own maturity by "punishing" those on the forum who you perceive as having wronged you? wow. definitely university material. |

I was speaking in generalities, and simply refering to the tone of your original post. Good that you have a thick skin, though. You'll need it to work at a university if you get the job. Cheers, P.R. |
