I looked over my pay stub for October again just now, and realized that 180,000 won was deducted from it for September and October's health insurance premium. I thought this was unfair because I didn't receive my health insurance card until mid-October (I started my job in September), so I couldn't and wouldn't have been able to use my health insurance in September. I can't read Korean, but I think it says on my health insurance card that I started my job on September 1, and the card was issued to me on October 16. Should I ask the school about giving me money back for September, or is this some kind of unfair standard procedure for all new teachers?

Health insurance is retrocative so you should pay from your first day of legal employment, but the amount seems too high for only two months. Usually teachers pay half of the monthly premium. The cost is not based on age or health but is a percentage of your income. We don't know your income level, but if you are paying half and you are earning typical teacher wages then you should be paying between about 45,000 and 65,000 won per month. Perhaps this was for three months, or perhaps they are charging you for 100% of the monthly fee.

OMG... now that I look at it again, it looks like the school didn't pay for 50% of my premium. The EPIK website says the premium is 4.31% of my total salary, but I only need to pay 50% of the premium.

Health insurance is 5.08% of your salary and is split 50/50 with the employer.

Your share is 2.54% of your salary every month.

IT IS going up in January by about 10% to ~5.75% (final number not yet determined).

How much is an average doctor's visit and prescription anyway (say, for a cold/flu)?

I miss Canada and universal health care...
