It's not quite 6 months like Canadians enjoy, but it's better than having to go in for an extension.

Think this will cause more illegals?

SEOUL, Nov. 16 (Yonhap) -- U.S. citizens will be allowed to visit South Korea for up to 90 days visa-free starting this week, a reciprocal measure to Korea's membership in the U.S. visa waiver program, the Justice Ministry said Sunday.

Korea is among seven new member states that will be added to the U.S. visa waiver program on Monday, along with Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. The program allows nationals from these countries to stay in the U.S. for up to 90 days without a visa.

Americans have gotten 90-day tourist visas for YEARS (and your post title says "90 day tourist visa starting this week"). I have gotten two such visas by applying for them at Korean consular offices. It's called C-3.

Now, Americans will get 90 days WITHOUT having to apply for a visa. This should make no difference whatsoever in how many dirty "illegals" there are here, because before, it was simply a matter of applying for a tourist visa, getting one in 24 hours, and being set for the next five years.

Americans won't stay in korea illegally because there is nothing in korea for them. People try to get out of here rather than staying. The problem is the korean end. There will be a lot of overstays and the US will probably suspend the program because of the abuse. koreans don't follow the rules and they'll do something to screw it up. Besides, there need to be a control mechanism on koreans coming into other countries.

You are correct. However, the landing permit that gets stamped in your passport upon arrival at the airport is colloquially known as a tourist visa.

It's not the "correct" term, but it's the term that gets used in Korea (and elsewhere).

tourist visa for US is 30 days without sending passport to Korean consulate..so.if it is now 90 days ...that must be without sending passport to Korean consulate..\\My previous tourist visa had to be received from the CA consulate since it was for 90-days..and if the law changed it should be similar to what the original 30-days was..Yes?

I wasn't going to say anything until I saw this comment......B/c it would be true, except for work.
With the way the economy and the job situation is in the US, you will see an influx of American jobseekers going to Korea to find work.

I think it is a better option- as long as the person has travellers insurance and the means to pay the key money for their wolsae, then the world is their fingertips.....

Other than that, I have nothing more to say....

I agree. I don't even think there is a guarantee that it WILL go up.

I mean, sure it's a miracle what Korea has done since the Korean War, but if you actually study Korean history, you'll see that for millennia, it has been poorer than China. One of the problems with the late Joseon Dynasty was that there were simply too many yangban, spending all day reading books and rolling around with gisaeng, and not accomplishing anything. Sound a little bit familiar? Yangban these days don't wear horsehair caps, and gisaeng opt for platform shoes and leggings instead of hanbok, but it's the same game.

I don't know why everyone has such profound faith in the Korean economy when let's face it, Korea has not exactly been a winner historically, why is its recovery to a major world power suddenly guaranteed now? Because we want it to be?

Who's to say the economy won't return to the way the Korean economy has been for thousands of years -- semi-depressed?

excuses, excuses, excuses.......
I guess some of you seem threatened that there could be an influx of people who might take advantage of the visa waiver to come and work....
Koreans will start coming to the US en masse soon and there aren't many jobs here either.........
Tell me, how do some of you cope with the fact that there are countless Canadians here on 6-month visas? I always hear things like the Korean gov't should revoke it.....
I am willing to gamble that in the long run, there will be alot more Americans coming over on a tourist visa to work...

uh, am not sure God had anything to do with it - am pretty sure it was

*an influx of foreign capital,

*the huge number of children that were abandoned to be taken care of by foreign ngos - freeing up Ks who wanted to find jobs and work, and not take care of their children

*a huge disregard for workers' rights, health and safety

*for that matter - the same for consumers - a lack of safety, health and rights

*the number of jobs created in order to rebuild the infrastructure of the country

*the tendency for Ks to disregard patents, copyrights, proprietary material, etc., and create copies of goods and services, call it their own and market it as such when in fact, the same goods, products and services are more often than not someone else's - heck - their entire music and entertainment industry is based on this concept alone!

no, no miracles. Rolling Eyes
