|
|
I know, the prospect is frightening, but last Thursday I was turned away from a place with the X forearms and told "Korean Only". I could have done without that but I politely told the bouncer he was a racist f**K and as I was turning away, another bouncer a further bit down some stairs had a big shit-eating grin and was making the X and saying "Korean Only, Korean Only".
I had heard about the VICTORIA HOTEL nightclub in MIASAMGOERI from my adult students, apparently there are some very "adult" things happening there, so after living within walking distance for 10 months I finally decided to scope it out.
Being a white American, I had never really been discriminated against based on my race. I've even gotten in to some exclusive clubs in the states. While this pissed me off, I'm not going to let it ruin me, but I do kind of wonder: What if I was with my Korean friends?
What about the super-hot half-Korean girl at my work? I'm sure she would get in, despite the fact that none of us even realized she was half-Korean until we were told.
What about other Waygooken ladies? Would they be turned away?
Does it apply to all foreigners or just us guys?
and finally, just exactly what kind of adult stuff is happening down there?
Would any foreign women care to investigate? break down some barriers?

Try these:
나는 군인이 아니다. 나는 선생님 입니다. (And show your ARC. Soldiers don't carry them.)
나는 미국인 아니다. 나는 영국인 입니다. (Only works if you're British.)
When they say "Korean Only" they usually mean "No Soldiers." |

Tried to get into a nightclub like that with a Korean male friend. Actually, he wanted to, and I didn't really know what the place was about. They told him I wasn't allowed inside because it would upset the other Koreans and they would lose business.
So, sad to say, it most certainly is about discrimination and has nothing to do with soldiers. |

I know DC, NYC, etc have "Korean/Asian" nightclubs, but there are always tons of white people in them, anyway...so I don't think they really take the "only" part very seriously. |

I've been turned away from four places. One of the places I had been to before, but with Korean friends. When I went with a non-Korean friend, they wouldn't let us in. It was my friend's first night in Korea too, and it did not leave a good impression on him at all.
For the nightclubs, it's pretty much just another form of pre-emptive c*ck blocking. Annoying but pretty much to be expected in this country. |

It's not their fault. Did you know that Korea used to be a poor country? Have you heard about Confucius? Korea is not developed.
Nothing any Korean does is ever their fault. |

Why anyone would want to hang around in a korean nightclub is beyong me. I don't really like hanging around inbreds and rednecks. Geez, do you really want to be around soju swilling, insecure guys and chicks that smell like garlic and kimchi? Anyhow, I would think those korean clubs would be lawsuit material in the US. Just bring a tape recorder or video camera with you and get them to say that you can't be admitted...sue them for discrimination. Might be a good way to make some money back home . Still, I don't have any interest in going to any korean place when I get home. I've had more of a fill here to last a thousand lifetimes. |

Maybe they're afraid you'll steal their women and cause them to lose money in their business. Surely the paying male customers are there to compete for a woman and they don't take it lightly if it appears you're gunning to score in their market.
I was turned away from clubs many times in European countries, but that has to do with GI's having a history of causing trouble. I guess some Koreans don't like GI's, but if you don't have the super short high and tighty hair, then it's obvious you're a teacher or engineer. |

I have been refused entry into a few places because I'm not Korean.
That said, it could be race. It could be age also. I have been unable to enter a few nightclubs because the Korean man or men with me were told that they were too old. The workers had no problem with me. The ajoshis started shouting, pushing and spitting, but to no avail.
The workers said having older men there would spoil the atmosphere among the young people. |

| "So you see sir, it's not that we at the Kitteuh Katteuh Clubeuh are racists, it's that our patrons are. And they're also insecure about their virility. As you see, we're following the dictates of the free market. Foreigners cannot eat the free market. The free market is too spicy." |

This is the one place in K0rea where racism is obvious (other than red light districts). Even if they do let you in the girls they bring to the table are often not so attractive and liable to run away saying they won;t sit with foreigners. The ones that stay sit and chat long enough to be polite (or so my experience has been).
Booking clubs are fun if you go with Korean friends and you bring your own ladies. Even having a few Korean girls introduced to you, or the table, while your female friends are off visiting other tables can be a little fun. You can practice some Korean and see a different part of the culture.
A lot of clubs will not let you in if you don't have a Korean friend as they assume you don't speak Korean or might be a soldier. And of course a lot of clubs don't want to deal with the hassle of trying to find you a girl who can speak a little English.
So even though race plays into it, I think a lot of it is language and the fact that most Koreans that go to night clubs aren't going to look for cultural diversity (they are going for a fun night among the people they understand....most people won't take the time to talk to the immigrant at a club back home if they don't speak much English). |

its a booking club, you were alone, a table will cost you at least 100,000
its not that ur a foreigner, if you were there with some Koreans you'd get in no problem, maybe even with another foreigner who speaks korean.
I've had plenty of mates get in with a group of 3 foreigners even if they don't speak Korean
seriously what is someone going to a place like that alone for anyway? if you cant speak Korean no fun, get stung with a big bill, and chances are you wont knock of the bottle of whisky alone.
general rule of thumb is you need to know of, or have a waiter to call when u step in the door |

One minute, people always saying how the Korean guys are losers for doing booking. Then the next minute, they want to be allowed in and experience it. Can't win I tell ya!!! Can't win!!
