So, my laptop is slowly dying and it's time to upgrade to a new and better desktop.

I'm looking custom building one (I don't live anywhere near Seoul so I am looking at doing it over the net and getting it shipped down here) and my budget is 1 mil give or take a bit.

Main considerations:

1) Big screen: About 26-28 inches as I will use this as my TV screen as well. I don't play computer games so is basically for watching movies and regular computer stuff.

2) Plenty of computing power, lots of RAM and processing power. I use image processing software, encoding software and occasionally video editing. Should I be going for 64 bit or 32 is ok?

3) Sound system. 5.1 surround sound system. Doesn't have to be top of the line but something that will put out good sound while watching movies and listening to music.

4) Don't need Windows, I have my own copy of XP.

5) Don't need all that much HDD, I have one terabyte external storage already.

6) Nice fans. I leave it on 24/7 so I want good cooling and quiet fans.

7) Optional: Perhaps a wireless keyboard and mouse.

Any suggestions on where to get this custom built? Also recommendations for the components appreciated.

Thanks!

definitely go 64bit

almost all motherboards have onboard 5.1 or better sound. I'm pretty sure this is good enough for all but the most discerning of ears and if your that picky you'll be spending a fortune on your speakers anyhow.

Sounds like you need a quad-core CPU. Whichever suits your budget.

If you want a quiet PC then reject the Intel stock cooler and whatever crappy fans come with the case. Get a specialist CPU cooler, around 50,000, and some nice quiet fans by a specialist company. Even a high-quality case fan is only around 10,000.

You'll also need to spend a little more on PSU if you want quietness. IMO, a smaller and cheaper PSU can often be noisier than a large wattage expensive PSU. For quietness and reliability, it's worth spending 80,000 and up on PSU.

I know a guy in I'Park Mall, Yongsan, who can order in the parts and build it for you while-u-wait. But he's not very cheap. You'll pay full price for everything. But he does a good job.

I'd recommend ordering parts online and trying to put it together yourself. It's surprisingly easy.

Recommend you get a decent PSU as well...I recommend a Zalman 600w psu...around 110,000 but well worth it. It's very dependable, well built and silent. Too bad you're building now...I see that Danawa and yongson prices have gone up quite a bit due to the weak won. Q6600 was about 205,000 three months ago but is now up around 247,000. I imagine other parts are the same. Also, try searching for com building threads in the tech forum and consider posting in them as there's a lot of good info in the majority of them.

Looks pretty straight forward. Built systems for varied prices. Even a part where you can custom build your own.

Q9400's w/ 4850's and 500g hdd's for 815,000...not to shabby.

All core 2 duo, core 2 quad and core 2 extreme processors are, as far as I know, capable of running both 32bit and 64bit versions of Windows. If you're not planning to change operating systems, this shouldn't matter to you at all.

That said, I've been running 64bit Vista and love it. There are really very few pieces of software that don't yet have 64bit compatible versions out. (The software I use to connect my KTF phone to my computer is one example.) It's much more secure as well. I'd recommend taking the plunge if you're going to buy a new system anyway.

One more thing to keep in mind - Intel just released a new processor platform, the Core i7. The cheapest ones run like $320 USD and you'd have to spend a bit more to get a compatible motherboard but it might be worth it if you plan to upgrade the machine a year or two down the line.

http://www.danawa.com/ or even Naver are decent sites if you're looking to do price comparisons on individual parts.
