Anyone been there recently seen the new rule about not reading books in Starbucks?

They stationed a guy with the sole purpose of being watchdog for the books.

I have serious gripes with this as it's my favorite thing to do. In fact, I feigned ignorance of it twice and got busted twice.

The thing I don't get is, they have a designated reading room. Not exactly sure what they are trying to accomplish except preventing me from sitting down and reading there versuses starbucks. The only difference is, I'm already paying 1/4 the price of the book just by having a latte.

I guess they don't want the books to be ruined by drops of coffee?

I just have a hard time seeing how they can justify placing a minnium wage worker to prevent people from reading the books (which is going to happen either way in starbucks or in the bookstore.)

They have same rule at Chapters/Indigo in Canada... common procedure.

Seems like a fair policy, if I owned a bookstore I'd do the same.

I'm sure it's also easier to steal a book if you were reading it at cafe and then just conveniently put it in your bag.

I can see how it's a fair policy.
It would be much easier to slip a book into your bag with no one watching and no way for them to prove you did. But I don't think Koreans steal that often.

It's just weird how they have a reading room where I can do the same exact thing. Just I'm paying money for coffee instead. I'm just curious as to why this new rule came about...

Actually, It's probably me because I stay there for 3-4 hours getting up and reading different books treating it like a library.

I'm going to try again today. It was a Sunday this all happened. Hopefully, it's a weekend only thing.

It's not a NEW rule. Maybe just the first time it was enforced with you. It serves to protect the books and keep the customer rotation going.

Please don't be a pain and try it again. It's their policy.

Ah, well the book protection I figured... The customer rotation I thought of too but didn't really take into consideration.

It's not New?
WTH I've been doing this for almost like 2 months now...
Is it just weekend enforced? If it is I'd be so glad to hear it.

EDIT: Personally, I buy almost everybook I read there. I respect the fact that it is their rule and intend to follow it in the future, but they certainly would be losing way more money out of me. I don't know about you but I like to at least give it thorough look before I buy it. I don't enjoy a book if I'm standing being weighted down by my bag and being forced to be admist people walking by, kind of distracting. I like to sit down, enjoy a cup of tea, relax and absorb it. In fact the pricey books that I did buy there I bought after I got more than halfway through them reading them at Starbucks. I could have just kept treating it like a library but I know better. And I imagine that's why they have that rule.

PS. Cresent you go there often? I think I have an idea of who you might be based on other posts you've made... Were you featured in a newspaper article made by middle school kids? I think we've met at a bar once with some guy named Jeff from New Zeland... Or I think you could be someone else I've met..

It's just the first time they've had the guts to approach you.

I WAS dating one of the women who worked there, but I don't go there often now. I also don't hang out much with expats, and don't know anyone named Jeff.... so I don't think we've met.

I really don't get out much.

Go downstairs and buy the book. Next, head back for coffee. When confronted, show your receipt. Problem solved.

My gripes is I like to sit down and read a book in a comfortable setting BEFORE I buy it. That's not really why I'm "upset" though.

They have a reading room which pretty much is the same thing, except no coffee (u can have water in feeble spillable cups though). The arguement for this rule so that they don't have damaged books makes some sense to me, but they overlook the aspect of the water in the reading room.

The fact that Starbucks wants increased turnover makes complete sense to me. So in that regard the rule makes sense, however by the same token I think they lose some customers (such as myself) that way.

But I'm not really bothered by it anymore. If it's not a new rule, it was just me not knowing about it before. In which case I got 2 months of a very good thing anyways. So I'm happy.
