There have been a couple of threads about Footprints Recruiting in the last little while, but I suppose one more couldn't hurt...

While my experience with FP was great, I'm starting to believe it had more to do with the person I was dealing with than the office itself...

Case in point - My recruiter (Ryan) bent over backwards to answer any of my questions, follow through on my concerns, talk me through the SMOE contract, help me with my visa delays, etc etc etc... Can't say enough about the guy... Had such a good experience that I recommend them to my girlfriend...

Her experience started out well enough until it came time to ask for a few changes to the Hagwon contract that she was offered... When she emailed her recruiter (Jordan) about having the academy make a few minor amendments to the contract she was told (rather oddly... a cross between stern and ackward...) that she should not be asking for any changes to the contract because there is no way that the Hagwon would agree, and that someone in her position should not even be bringing up the possibiliy of changes being made... Needless to say she is now talking to the academy directly...

Now, am I crazy - or is it NORMAL to ask for changes to a Hagwon contract because they are usually so full of BS that certain elements need to be altered to make them managable?

I'm not knocking Footprints, nor am I outright supporting them any longer... Just sharing my story, take from it what you will if you decide to investigate them further...

Someone in her position? Is she a homeless leper or something?

I'd say the hagwon is in the weak position. They are paying for someone to find a teacher for them. If they were so desired recruiters working for teachers would be contacting them. I've never seen a teacher pay for a position. And, it's only going to get worse if the exchange stays over 1400.

Well, she is a trained journalist... Razz...
But I agree, the schools here want us... And with the exchage the way it is they need to start fighting for us (not like it will really happen Rolling Eyes lol)... But for a recruiter to say that the Hagwon would not change anything, so don't ask (especially without asking the Hagwon first!) is just bad business in today's teacher market...

The public school contracts are pretty well cast in concrete for applicants to ask for any personal changes to be made to them. Did you ask for any change to your PS contract ? You would have heard the word 'No' if you had.

Traditionally some hagwons ( especially in Seoul) have a good chance of getting many applicants so they will often have the same stance of 'NO changes".
Why change something for one person when there is an equally qualified applicant waiting around the corner with another recruiter?

Surely your problem with your girlfriends situation is that you were expecting the recruiter would have the power to get a contract change approved, when he was not able to and told her this would be 'difficult' to do. Maybe he was alerting you to a fact of the situation, not just being less than helpful

I agree with you, government contracts are non-negociable... But that's not the case here... I was expecting the recruiter to at least ask, and to be professional about it. To be told "Someone in your position should not be asking for changes" was just kinda out there... Hey, I could be completly wrong, but by the sound of his email he didn't even approach the Hagwon about the changes being requested. (But gave my gf the owner's email address so she could talk to him directly... *shrugs*)...

Hmmmm..... Sounds like a lazy recruiter to me....

He gets his fee for introducing them if they finally agree so I'd bet he's just putting in minimum work and hoping they might agree rather than putting in a lot of work for something that might not happen....
