This isn't a complaint thread, but one of those about discovering those little things that somehow make your life much simpler when you discover them. I have a few to start from a real noobie here:

1. The subway. Wish I'd known it was right there underneath me when I first got here. Walked many, many miles without realizing there was a much simpler way to get places.

2. That the tickets for the subway needed to be kept all the way to the END of the trip. Thought buying a ticket and putting it into the turnstile was all that was necessary. A bit embarrassed when I got to my first destionation.

3. That the subway card doesn't get put into the same slot as the paper ticket. Yeah, was really embarrassed as they had to open up the machine and fetch my card for me.

4. That the neighborhood corner store (which is not on MY corner) actually delivers food items to my house if I ask, instead of my lugging 12 bottles of water to my apartment.

The bus is awesome! Learn what the numbers mean (420 goes from area 4, to area 2, then area 0), learn where the colors go, and to open the back door you press the red STOP buttons.

Hey now... we don't all come from big cities.

OP, I felt your pain. It takes awhile to get used to. But once you do get used to it, you'll realize that it's a really great system!

And put shoes on before you leave your apartment.

Not all coming from big cities? C'mon now, the existence of a subway?!?!

Don't forget to wipe your ass before you pull up your pants!

I wish I had known how big the demand really is in Korea for English teachers and that I could have been more choosy when it came to my placement.

"Sure! It's OK if you put me in the countryside," I said to try to improve my chances of being hired (not that difficult, I know now). They really made good on their offer.

I wish I had known more about the different neighborhoods in Seoul so I wouldn't be in Dongdaemun-gu. Not the best place.

I think the only dumbo mistake I've made while here was when I first arrived, I put my bank book in the ATM as a whole instead of folded open like your supposed to. It got stuck. It was a weekend, and so I used my limited Korean to call for assistance. Luckily I scored right, and a guy showed up on a bike within 15 minutes to remove it.

I like to walk around with two powerful magnets in my pocket, you know, for fun.

When I was in Seoul once I bought a subway ticket and put it in my little jeans pocket. It wouldn't work when I got off the train, and it took the guy in the special information/administration room to remind me of what a doofus I am.

Now I put the ticket in the pocket on the other side.

I wish I'd known that the countryside is just as loud and annoying as the city.

1. To not hang around people just because you arrived in the same general group. If they're lame/weird you out/bore you, you'll friend more and better friends.

2. To get a hobby.

3. To realize that you have the power in the relationship, not your principal or boss

4. On the same token, to be quietly enraged by somethings and not vocally enraged: pick your battles.

Where did you grow up, in the Northwest Territories? You remind me of a home-schooled & Bible-schooled young woman I know who's first time leaving the Praries was to come to Korea. I showed her how to buy a ticket for the Seoul Subway (the previous day I had shown her how to get on the Daegu Subway - no different except you get a plastic token instead of a paper ticket) and she just stood there staring at the ticket asking 'But how do I know which one to get on? Is there no seat number?'.

She lasted three months before she had a nervous breakdown.
