Since the huge tanking of the Koean Won.......how many of you guys have left, decided to ride the storm out........or simply chose NOT to go to Korea?

I'm choosing to ride it out until my contract finishes. 4,000,000 won for final pay + severance still makes a pretty fat wallet when I go back home.

Well, allow me to be more specific.

How many of you arrived in Korea ....lets say.......between 3-6 months ago and have decided to bail..........or are sticking it out?

How many of you arrived less then 4 months ago have decided to bail or stick it out?

Also, what is the cost of living like? Has there been a change?

I'm just wondering what's going on.

I'm gonna ride it out... in fact, I brought USD 10,000 back from holidays/home leave at the beginning of Sept. and converted it to won at 1,442.35 to the dollar on Oct. 25... there's an ill wind that does not blow somebody some good.

Of course, the won may 'tank' even farther and if predictions of 1,600 won to the dollar by the end of the year out to be true, I'm stupid! We'll see.

Ask me again when it gets closer to the end of my contract. I have nowhere else to really go at the moment. Home? Meh. Teach in a different country? Meh.

To minimize the effect of the current Won situation, just put your cash into a high-interest savings account.
I just opened one at over 8.4% interest for 1 year.
Even with the tax on gains, that's still about 7.2% net gain.
Nothing even close to that back in Canada.

I'm still planning on heading over early 2009. It's still better than staying here.

Spill the beans. What bank is it? Is there a minimum deposit? I don't speak much Korean but I need to do this.

Hmm... how much is inflation in SK these days?

This reminds me of seeing 22.5% interest at banks in Honduras in 1997. Not a good idea if inflation ended up being 25%.
