I am just curious what the NORM is in Korea,

... the hole I am living in has no heat in the bathroom which is off to the outside of the hole...in the morning it is very cold trying to psyche myself into taking a shower...

a Korean teacher told me that Koreans don't have heat in their bathrooms Laughing

so how about giving your yes or no, as it might help those thinking of coming here to know what to expect

No heat in the bathroom.

But it gets really hot with the shower- what I do is I turn on the shower (hot water) for 2 minutes before I go in and keep the door closed. Then when I go in it's like a steam room, so nice!

Newer houses have heat, but most built five or so years ago or earlier do not as the norm.

Don't ask me why. I have no idea.

Maybe because most don't or didn't I should say have bathtubs, so the room and floor get heated in the process of taking the shower.

Best I can come up with.

Wear plastic slippers in the bathroom as tiles are too cold and full of germs.
Wait 30 seconds for the water to heat up.

If it really bothers you sitting a while, consider getting a blower heater for times you are on the throne.

Have a wonderful radiator which heats up well as soon as I put on the ondol. First time ever have had a bathroom heater in Asia though. New building.

My old apartment had a radiator (run off the ondol) in the bathroom, my new one doesn't. The only explaination is: Klogic... why heat a room that's constantly wet? It might cut down on the growth of mildew. Rolling Eyes

The ondol pipes run FROM the bathroom. It gets so hot in there that you must wear slippers or you'll get second degree burns on your feet. The dogs like it though and we call it the Dog Jimjilbang.

Don't worry about germs, as they are your germs and everywhere you go anyway. Just wash down the floor before taking a shower to make it warm, that's what I do.

I run the hair dryer for about 10 minutes before a shower. I hate a cold bathroom.

so my big concern right now with the change of weather is - don't the pipes freeze if there is no heat in the bathroom?

the bathroom is on the outer side of the main room - and the kitchenette is outside the main room and there is no heat in there either -

it is like their is no designing/planning for such things (as freezing of pipes)

Damn I have no heat in my room or kitchen. And it will be cold for 3-4 months. Guess I ought to purchase a heater or something.

No heat in my bathroom --- also, probably a bad idea to leave bathroom door open in summer or any time of year . . . I doubt they're very insulated. My suggestion: run the shower for a few minutes before you go in to shower.

I have one of these too.. but my building is about 40 years old. Shocked

I wish the whole apartment had radiators instead of the stupid floor heating. As soon as I turn it on... hey, the bathroom is warm. The rest of the place is still cold, and stays cold for hours. I know I'm losing a ton of heat to the person below me. I hate ondol!

Doesn't warmth encourage the growth of mildew/mold, etc?
