Meditating on matter certainly has no spiritual benefit.

It's also not recommended to meditate on anything impersonal or void.

To avoid confusion and get started in the right direction, follow this link:

The mind can never be clear. It's past the mind. The very nature of the mind is not clearity. All attempts to clear it will fail. It can be clear but then busy a second later. It's about not listening to the mind and not thinking that it is you.

No matter how enlightened corn on a pizza is just wrong.

Well thats why there are ranks in the meditation worlds...
Buddhists, Yogis, Zen masters past and present have spent their whole lives to reach a place of higher self.

One thing is for sure... A Skeptic will never reach the full capability of enlightenment in meditation. So if you are Atheist or a non believer then you can enjoy certain parts of meditation... but the best parts and rewards of meditation will be unreachable to you...

To journey to the abyss of ones mind will take a VERY talented trained explorer! And still then that person wouldnt have got that far compared to whats there.
You have to be very strong minded and be able to battle all emotions to reach the prefect state of being..
meditation and the mind is the ultimate place isnt..

I think the focus is be free of thought, to clear the mind. Yes, the nature of the mind is not clarity, the nature of being is clarity. However, I am not sure all of forms of meditation have the same goals. For example, Christian mystical meditation has to do with uniting with the divine. Would you say the same about Zen meditation? I am not sure. As far as Hindu type meditation there is a lot of emphasis in terms of uniting with the divine. One can also say the same thing about Buddhism in Tibet and Thailand, I think. I like mantra meditation. Lately, I've found myself liking the Gayatri meditation which is popular amongst some Buddhists and many Hindus. I also do like the Om Mani Padme Hum which encourages compassion for sentient beings.

Has anyone read any good books about mantra meditation? I personally like Thomas Ashley Farrand? To those who pratcice Zen Meditation do you think one must sit in a certain position. Why is there such an emphasis on sitting in a certain way?

Watch the David Deida videos on youtube. There are three of them and they explain this topic very well.

Trying to fit an eastern concepst into a western mind. In the end the fastest path is surrender.

Osho is a great read and covers the whole spectrum.

Zen meditation is usually cross legged with hands in murda "or open lotus hand" position. There are varying ways of zen meditation. As long as your legs and body is comfortable then it's fine.

Like all other meditations the focus is on a straight spine but relaxed. Your head should "support the sky" meaning you should be stable and straight.

In addition, with zen meditaiton one should have "Beginners mind". Do not search for any goal of meditation. Practice zanen with no goal in mind. Practice to practice.

I find that focusing on material really helps. I count cheeseburgers or chant "OOOOOOOOMMMMMoney, Money, Money." Works great, right RTeacher?

Really, I practice counting breaths. After doing 15 minutes of breathing exercises to awaken, relax and oxygenate the body, I begin to focus on the lower abdomen. At first, I count both the in-breath and the out-breath in series of ten.

I like the series of ten because you can tell if you've wondered off. If you find yourself counting up to thirteen, you catch yourself. Or, if one was an exhale and on the next one count is an inhale, you've caught yourself. Your mind has wandered.

After I get through a few rounds successfully, I count only the inhale or the exhale. If I get through a few rounds of this, I can try pure sitting. I do nothing but watch my body breath.

I'm low on the skill level, but my day is better when I do meditate. My mind is clear and I am calm.

It curtainly isn't. (ok, silly joke)

I reckon the attraction to science for some folks is that in some fields it is possible to be precise. In technical matters we can sometimes be exact and clear. In understanding ourselves, our psychology, this seems beyond the reach of almost everybody who ever lived. I'm not keen on any method. I find it's good to sit quietly and just be aware of whatever is happening inside and outside. The mind's a bugger though, it's like a restless kid who is only focused when he has a toy, something to entertain him.

I suggest you to find the source of your not-good-feeling and then solve it.
Pray for you!
