Should Dave's ESL Cafe moderate the exchange rates quoted in employment ads to reflect current reality?
Yes, the job ad should either quote no exchange rate, or an exchange rate accurate within 5% at the time of posting.

Yes, but I have another idea on how it should be done (please specify).

As a previous poster pointed out, many jobs are still claiming on the job board to pay $2,800 a month (2.8 million won), $33,000 a year (33,000,000 won), etc. However, they are still using the old exchange rate of $1 = 1,000 won. This afternoon, I checked at Woori Bank and it's actually 1,476 to the dollar.

Any ad that still uses $1 = 1,000 won is outright lying and should either be deleted, corrected, or sent back to the poster for resubmission. This was a forgivable error when the won first started to fall, but it has been falling for a while now and the job ad posters should know better -- I think they are purposely leaving the ads unchanged to deceive incoming English teachers, at which I'm afraid they may be successful.

The employers would rather leave their ads unchanged and deceive incoming teachers, so I believe some form of community moderation of the ads is in order.

When payments are done in local currencies, it is up to the one who signs the contract to know the relative value of the respective coinage.

People who are too naive to check for themselves shouldn't be taking jobs in another country.

What I do feel is that the exchange rate should not be mentioned. People will then be inclined to check it out for themselves.

Some recruiters are deliberately lying about the exchange rate to make lower paying jobs sound more attractive.

Yes, if you're that dumb then you probably deserve what you get, but still, I'd rather see some scumbag Korean boss inconvenienced or bankrupted than some idiot foreigner ripped off.

Delete and ban the lying ads.

It would be easy enough to put a currency converter on the site. Have people take responsibility for checking the rate themselves. Have employers and recruiters state the salary in terms of local currency.

Recruiters lie all the time. Dave doesn't care. Why should he as long as he gets his money in US currency.

Agreed, lying and cheating should be abolished. $1,000 does not equal a million won. Whoever tries to sell a job with this rate should be banned.
But I doubt this is a major issue for Dave. This is, after all, a money-making site and we are the observers while these cheating, lying, slimy, smelly recruiters rip off poor and vulnerable newcomers.
If I haven't made my opinion clear yet let me just assert that I really don't like recruiters. Evil or Very Mad

There are NO "honest mistakes" with this by recruiters. The exchange rate has been bad for months and everyone knows it.

Dave should just add a 50% surcharge to recruiters who want to post a known lie.

This must be a joke. This site barely functions as it is and you think he's going to add a fancy feature like that?? Laughing

Obviously Dave isnt' going to do anything about it, but if enough posters wanted to, they could make life a pain for any lying ad poster. If 200+ people send emails in reply to each lying ad complaining about their exchange rate and make the title look like they are an applicant, that will cause a whole lot of inconvenience. (Not that foreign teachers could ever get organized enough to do this.)

Nor should we have to be bothered by doing that when the site that hosts the misinforming (lying) ads could do something as easy as putting a currency converter on the site as losing_touch said, with a disclaimer about checking current conversions when considering a position at the top of the Jobs Forum. We already know that isn't going to happen though.

Just drag it out (only if you spot a lying recruiter, don't do this to the honest ones). Make the recruiter find a ton of schools. Do interviews over the phone (so you don't waste your time). Make a lot of requests, stall the recruiter and make them think you are very interested in the low paying jobs. It will take a week for you to get the paperwork in right? Do everything sequentially with the recruiter (actually, you won't be doing anything, just waiting a few days to do the "next step").

We could make this a game, who can keep a recruiter hanging on the longest (like with those telemarketers). Rules would include posting emails stating the low salary, bad conditions (if any), etc...

If you post anything legit though, that would be expected in a contract, you are disqualified. Again, this is only for the recruiters who are lying and cheating people.

We could make them send us pictures of themselves holding fire and cards that read "You can trust me!!" Cool Cool
