Was on the bus not long ago. Bus stops at the lights and pedestrians start crossing. (Mokdong)

Ajosshi on bigass scooter runs a girl down (girl not at fault, ajosshi ran a red light)

Girl lands on the side, purse goes flying into the air, comes crashing down, items strewn all over the place.

Ajosshi approaches the girl who's now sitting in the middle of a really busy intersection, crying and covering her face with her hands. Ajosshi mumbles a few words, gets on his scooter and takes off. Nobody offers her a hand. Light turns green, bus starts moving.

The last thing I saw was this poor, scared girl sitting in the middle of the road, cars driving dangerously close by her from every angle, I'm still in disbelief.... (guessing she was in her 20s)

How could he just take off like that......?
How come nobody punched that guy in the face?
How come nobody offered to help her?

Yep ive seen something similar but not in korea....sadly lots of people dont wanna get involved these days..

but how long did the bus wait? why didnt you get off and help? did you at least call the police or ambulance? note down the guys reg number?

ive seen a few accidents in korea and people are always super shocked and always offer help...and almost all of them stood around to watch too...ive never seen them all just walk off like that..its weird.

and nobody punched him in the face because most of the people there probably werent little children fresh from the school yard.

but in the two weeks that i've been here, i guess it's inevitible (spelling). i see buses running red lights (my bus to school runs reds everyday). i see cars slowly inching forward on red lights, then they take off when the coast is clear. i see motorcycles go through reds without stopping.\

but i knew what to expect before coming over. i'd help the girl on the street if i was there. but i think most of us would, wouldn't we?

yeah, OP, you could have at least nudged a passenger next to you and motioned for them to call the police on their cell phone -

I was on a bus once, sitting in the seat next to the back door - on the window side. A fellow who seemed to have cerebal palsy (I think that's it - the one where you have spasms a lot and can't move properly?) got off the bus but was on the street, not the sidewalk. it was very crowded. he couldn't get up the curb and tried to get people's attention to help him. everyone looked the other way.

I was furious. we were sitting for a moment so I opened the window and started shouting at them to help him. I caused a real rukus because it was infuriating.

the anjumma next to me got excited and shouted at them in K and next thing I knew several people helped him - anjumma nudged me and smiled and said something to the other people on the bus about me - it was good - we understood each other w/o speaking the language!

be pro-active next time - don't think about what you can't do but what you can - then do it - it will come as second nature soon enough -

in the mean time, don't feel bad you didn't do something this time - you'll have another chance, I promise!

Yes, I witnessed something similar.

Saw a car hit a guy on a motorcycle knocking him hard onto the ground. The driver of the car stopped long enough to realize what he had hit and then took off. As the cyclist was still getting up, all the cars started driving around him and none stopped to help.

This was on a on ramp in Santa Monica, CA.

Anyone that enforces man made rules over rules of nature will not win in the end. Is it really helpful to call an ambulance when someone chooses not to look both ways before crossing? Was this premeditated?

On the surface, it looks like a tragedy and insensitive to not react. However, in the end, helping sometimes conditions people to become dependent on others to do their looking for them. Maybe, now she will look where others are and not just where she is walking because of this incident.

It's important to take action if you see something, especially if it affects your own safety. Take the case of a fire in a subway car - Koreans will just sit there waiting to burn to death pretending not to notice. If you don't do something you will die too.

Do you know where the fire extinguishers are kept and how to use them?

Do you know how to operate the emergency door release? (Buses have them too)

It might be a good idea to find out.

Bear in mind, however, when attending accidents that Korea has no 'Good Samaritan' law. You could be exposing yourself to liability if you render medical assistance to someone here. I'm not saying don't do it, but you should be aware of the risks. That may be part of the reason that nobody helps anyone here.

And yet we waygooks get the red carpet guest treatment of having locals run up to us at the slightest indication that we are lost or confused, they offering to help give directions.

As a Korean once told me: Koreans don't treat other Koreans as well as they treat foreigners, there's a cold distance.

Civil society here has a gaping hole when it comes to helping others in need. There's no Good Samaritan tradition.
