Soju bottles are sold at several liquor stores here where I live for $5.99. I have been buying them every weekend. We also have quite a bit of Korean markets nearby here.

Well, I know you miss Korea, but if you want to drink, there's much better brew available where you are. You also have a huge selection to choose from which is why you can find Korean things at home. Every time I go home, I notice and appreciate things from many corners of the world that I never noticed before until I traveled.

I've been in Korea all of a year and a half, but hadn't drank soju since my 1st couple months here because it really is one of the worlds worst drinks if your health and quality of life means anything to you. Just to be honest about it, I would also nominate the domestic beer to be some of the worlds worst too. It gets old for me to have very limited shopping options and no bars to sit down and chat it up with strangers or people I already know locally. You have small stores with Hite, OB, Cass, and Korean Budweisers, Soju, and maybe some craptacular over priced whiskey. Nothing more than that. I'd like to enjoy a high quality Caribbean rum such Cruzan or German hefewiezen beer tonight, but nothings available.

It's worth it to spend a little more on decent quality drink if only drinking on occasion(cities have some selections), because the Korean soju and beer just dries you out and makes you really sick with it's chemical laden toxic brew. This is what's going so wrong for the men, besides lacking nutrition in their diet. Look at their rough accelerated aged faces and notice how much discomfort they're in. Despite how obvious, soju and their poor diet destroys them, they'll continue to believe the nationalist value that soju is good for them. Unlike in the West where lifestyle is individual choice, in Korea it's a societal norm thing to do what they do and why they do it.

I can drink and eat whatever I want so I go for what I know has quality regardless where it comes from, because I'm not trying to save face with the idea I should drink and eat what my own country produces to support it's economy nor do I have to show nationalist pride by eating and drinking domestic things to conform to the group with the idea of maintaining it's traditional culture. I'm thankful I'm not Korean or any other small country man who must conform to it's pitiful norms. I appreciate and value my individual freedoms to enjoy things from any country with no guilt or peer pressures to do otherwise.

All the choices back in the USA and you choose that nasty, rot soju? And at $6 bucks a pop! Shocked . What a waste of money. I take it that finance and logic aren't your strong suits...

Soju is shite. It is here and I'm sure it is there. I'm quite content with my frothy mug of Hoegaarden (Emart special today). Very Happy

OP, you need to find some good beer like Yuengling. It'll help get the taste of soju out of your mouth. Wink

$6 seems pretty expensive for a soju.. unless it's one of those "big soju" gallon type things

I mean, I guess you should buy some and share with your friends once saying "This is what I had to drink in Korea", but after that novelty wears off, that's just too expensive for what you get

I drink it in Korea and China because it's a cheap buzz, but that's the only reason

You guys are all crazy. Soju is easier on my stomach than the others for some reason and gives a better buzz. I'll take soju over whiskey anyday and I used to drinka ton of whiskey in college. I love soju.

I know I'm stating the obvious here but the reason why Soju and Makelli are expensive in America is because of the cost of shipping them all the way from Korea. This is stuff that has to be produced on American farms. There are farms in America that produce Kimchi.

Not really, it's more so because of the tariff taxes.

I went home for a few months in '05 and smuggled soju in the paper cartons just to get me through. It's good to know I won't have to do that again. Soju with a little Coke really perks up a Friday evening.
