I remember seeing the advertisements all over back in my hometown for the crime reporting hotline, 'Crimestoppers', that promised a reward for reports leading to convictions. Somehow I doubt it's used for something as petty as reporting not charging for plastic bags or some equally prosaic "criminal" activity. Actually, I can't understand why this situation is even a crime. I mean, who cares as long as someone is paying the "eco-friendly" tax on the bags. Obviously, the owner is paying it out of his/her own pocket if he/she isn't charging the customer. And if he/she isn't doing so, then the government should wise up and charge the tax at the point source where the bags are originally produced and sold so that the resuppliers are more willing to charge the tax. At best, this tax is merely a symbolic reminder to raise environmental consciousness but I strongly doubt it's actually effective. At the least, I hope the tax money is being placed into recycling programs but I strongly suspect that it's being placed into the black hole of general revenue.
Anyway, I suspect that Mr. Moon Sun Uk has been the victim of a media trying to portray him as a petty money grubbing peeping Tom. They probably picked the most insignificant of his operations as a sort of smear attempt while carefully using neutral language to pass it off as balanced journalism. I hope the majority of his investigations are into safety violations and criminal activities; something that I have no objection for him and others like him to receive financial rewards for doing. |

What about the people that run red lights at school crossings or the scooters on the sidewalk? |
No, it's a plastic bag thing. It's more important. Also people flinging butts on the street. More important than red-light runners.
One thing they should make them do is give receipts. Are they spying for that? |

The scooter sidewalk ban went into effect in Seoul last week. Since you can now be fined for this, you should not be able to videotape it happening and collect cash.
So some petty numbnuts wants to bust the little mom & pop for giving away bags, that's their problem. If you start choosing which laws are covered under your Citizen Patrol program though, you risk general confusion.
So I'm fully behind this if it stops a few kids from getting plowed into on the sidewalk, or in the crosswalk. Those are my customers! |

I'm going to go to this academy and make sure they give me a certificate.
Then I'm going to travel the world claiming that "Yeah.. so I trained in a spy academy in Korea..".
Spying and snooping are the same right? |

Yes lets blame Korea for George Bush tanking the American Economy.
Lets make comments about the weather even though Korea resembles Arizona or Nevada in summer, and North Dakota or Wisconsin in the winter.
As for the snitching, I guess they dont have snitches back in the states eh?
Nobody snitches on Immigrants back home, NO! |
Hey dipshit, I've been here a hell of a lot longer than you. I'm not a newbie here bitching about everything non-American and "Why do Korenas do this/that crazy shit?" No need for another person to apologize for Koreans. Do you think I don't know what the weather is like in winter? I've been through 5 of them. Do you think I blame Koreans for the weather? Of course not, but I can still vent about it. Do you think I blame Koreans for the falling value of the won? Well . . . I'm not an expert, but I'd say their past decisions do have an impact on the current situation. Of course you quit your job on Wall Street to come teach English, so you probably know better. As for the snitching, yes, where I grew up snitching was highly frowned upon . Of course it exists. But it usuallly exist in the form of people trying to get themselves out of a jail sentence. There are paid informants, but I consider them police or crooks-turned-police. What was shown in that video totally doesn't effect me at all. I'd be the reciient of the free bag, not the giver of the bag. But it does surprise and sicken me to see the goverment promoting this kind of petty behavior. |
Oh I see how informative, thanks. Ive lived here since May 2004, How many winters does that mean Ive lived through here? Oh right, FOUR of them, starting my fifth now, I guess that extra one youve lived through made all the difference on being able to comment on it. Im not saying that you cant complain about the weather, but when you phrase is as basically " oh yeah Korea is AWESOME and then go off about the weather, come on.
You also back door a "korea sucks" sentiment by commenting on the won sucking against the dollar even though much of the globe is in an Economic crisis, incuding America.
And, a number of AMerica's decisions tanked the dollar too, lost of those nice little policies George Bush continually signed as governor, and then as President that allowed the rich nice tax breaks, but I guess more of the blame should be pointed to the Koreans?
And about the snitching thing, I'll be totally honest, i dont even know exactly what youre talking about, the link wouldnt load, but considering there are snitches everywhere, many of them promoted by governments, snitching about anything, and usually for some kind of advantage, and in many cases againt people they were supposedly loyal to, I just really don't see your point.
Complain about the weather all you want, I do, I hate the fact that its bone chilling cold, something Im not used to, but seeing as though Ive lived through about 25 Canadian winters that were usually colder than a mother, I don't exactly think Korean weather is that much different. Not in the respect that If I need to wear a thick ass coat, gloves and a toque on many days to get to work.
Man, I really dont have an issue with you. I was poking fun at your sentiment. if you didnt mean what you said as "korea sucks" then ignore me, but if you do think Korea sucks, after living here for five years, for the reason you gave, well, sorry, but I'm gonna poke fun at that. |

And yes, I was talking out of my ass, many of you know I do that, I have never spent significant times in any of the places I commented on about the weather.
When Im called on for bull, I admit to it.
My meaning was that SURELY there is someplace in america where the Winters are pretty damn cold with not a crazy amount of snow.
And that there is someplace in America where the summers are pretty damn hot and humid to boot.
If there is no place in America like that then well i guess I am REALLY talking out of my ass.
However Bush helped to tank the economy ( both by his own actions and with the help of policies made before him) and of course an crappy American economy doesnt help other countries with major trade and ecomonic ties to them |

Talking out of your ass here. Bush wasn't responsible for the meltdown., especially when he was governor.
I understand you wanting to stand up for your wife's homeland, but doing it all the time in every thread that has something bad to say about Korea just makes you look like an apologist. Let people bitch sometimes. |

Try reading what I said Bush HELPED with the meltdown Try reading up ona his governorship. "is our children learning" is an eye opening book for anybody that thinks anything even remotely positive about Bush. Im quite certain the butt kisser to the rich helped take the economy into a nosedive in the last 8 years. Its like an airplane going down, sure its going down, but when your lean forward on the wheel and not pull back, youll crash the plane faster, even if it was going down before you did anything.
I HARDLY post on EVERY thread where people bitch about KOrea, To post on EVERY thread where people bitch about Korea Id need to devote 24 hours a day and go without sleep.
But you're right, I guess people should have an unlimited right to bitch about the country and I should not have the right to tell some of these people to get their heads out of thier self righteous asses.
If your mantra is to let people bitch sometimes, then by your own advice, do I not have the right to bitch about the people bitching?
I dont just defend it because its my wifes homeland, at the moment it is MY HOME, and just like all of you I CHOSE to come here way back when. All the attacking of it is pretty insulting really. |

Holy mind your own business. taken from that site:
To my knowledge, abortion is illegal in Korea.
I know someone who is scheduled to have an abortion this Saturday at 10 am in Seoul. The clinic is called Jo-A Ob/Gyn Clinic (ƻΰ) in Sindang-dong.
Can the police do anything to stop this? If so, who should I contact for more details?

Mind your own freaking business, or offer to carry the woman's baby to term for her...christ almighty...that really makes me want to stomp on some bibles. |

Although the guy has been a total nightmare, you're giving him too much credit for that one. This economic crisis was brought on by sustained policies carried out over decades by concerted players. He was just the meatball left holding the bag when the shit finally came crashing down. |
Couldn't agree more, Caniff. The guy is a *beep*, but no one with half a brain would say he alone is responsible for the current economic crisis. He helped it along, certainly, but the greed of the banking industry coupled with a lack of regulation is what got us in this trouble. |

I was oversimplifying it, hence the reason I AMMENDED the comment later. Gerge Bush ALONE did not tank the American Economy, but anyone with half a brain predicted he WOULD tank it further if he was president for an 8 year term. YOu just have to look at how bad he jeopardised the texas economy by all his decisions as the governor ( as I said, read the book "Is our Children Learning" its pretty well researched, and shows just where Bush's loyalties lie TO THE RICH!
BUt I guess Bush made many Smart decisions as President, I mean theres that part where he lied to the World about WMDs in Iraq and used the tragedy of 9/11 to justify going after a guy NOT RESPONSIBLE for it so that he could try to finish the war his daddy started. I mean its not like tis war didnt help sink the American Economy?
Anyway, I could go on, and yes, you can call me whatever adjective you want, If I am being compared to, or being called that by people who continually bash the country they currently call home, then the comment does not bother me in the least.
if I am another guy who comes on here to say korea sucks id be patted on the back and supported, but since 80 percent of the Daves board are the opposite I am caled troll, apologist, or a Korean.
Anyone with half a brain, and actual knowledge of George Bush's motivs and actions would know that he helped to tank the economy.
Simple as that |
