so i got my phone today!!! i didn't have one so it was a new contract. i really wanted a haptic 2 but wanted to go with LG as they have the reputation for no deposits for foreigners. unfortunately, the haptic that LG offers has a slightly smaller screen than the haptic 2 and crappy background options for the screen.....what can i say, i'm picky!
so i went downtown, went to four shops to compare prices, both LG and non-LG....
first guy through gestures and the random english word here and there told me that foreigners can't have the actual haptic 2- something about sim cards and foreigners not going together. i just kept saying telling him it was okay and finally he gave me a price plus a deposit (non LG).
second guy spoke zero english and gave me a price for the phone but gestured that i couldn't have a contract. it made zero sense so he finally called someone up to translate. turns out i could have a contract plus a deposit (non LG).
third guy was LG- no deposit but not much discount on a phone with contract.
fourth girl told me i couldn't have a phone. first reason was that my arc isn't good for the next 365 days that i would be in a contract. i tried to explain to her that it isn't my fault immigration makes my card valid for less than a year after i arrive- their problem, not mine. i just kept saying yes and she gave in on that point but said that i had to have a korean credit card to have a contract. i said i don't have one, she said no phone. i said yes phone. then she gave me the best deal of the bunch, with no deposit for my ktf contract!
after an hour of explaining what she could and looking up half the contract in her phone dictionary so that i knew what i was signing, she wanted to check out my ipod and the photos i have stored on it.....
after another 45 minutes of the four korean staff being amused with my writing and reading knowledge of korean (but little actual comprehension yet) and the fact that i count money differently then the korean style, i was out the door with my shiny new wonderful haptic 2!!!
it's a great day |

Wow,
Well done Mekku. You have the patience of a saint and the determination of a bulldog. Shows what you can do here despite all of the barriers thrown up, if you are both patient and polite.
I don't think I could have done it. |

| It's easy at LG if you don't really care about the type of phone. And even easier if you get a charge (pp,carduh) phone. |

Why get a haptic 2 when the much nicer T*Omnia phone is available? |

I went to Technomart and it took about 20 minutes for a non-contract phone. Then again no doubt the OP got a much better deal than me (and deserved it after their tenacity!) but I didn't care what kind of phone I had, so long as it wasn't too big... |

"nicer" is a matter of opinion. i did my research and prefer the haptic over the omnia. it's a matter of preference... |

it would have been easy at lg.....even though that guy spoke no english and kept telling me 'no contract'
but i very much cared about which cell phone i was going to buy and unfortunately lg had nothing i was interested in. i've always been picky about my cell phone, back home was the same thing.... |

she said 'no card, no phone'

she said 'no'
i said 'yes'
***continue this another round or two***
