Obese have right to 2 airline seats: Canada court
I am sure my title shows my opinion on this. Genetics, depression or even medicine can cause someone to be overweight, maybe even hitting on fat. Obesity is not caused by any of these, and the sole cause for obesity is ignorance and laziness, neither of which should be encouraged. We need to get them out of their electric wheelchairs, charge their families who keep feeding them (I know they do it out of love, but they are pushers) with assault and make sure they know society won't pay for their laziness (which I will be doing, albeit not that much with this ruling).
How long do you think it will be before no one in society is responsible for anything they do? |

Yup, I agree that this is ridiculous.
People who have the compulsion to overeat to the point of obeisity have mental problems. Accomodation them in this way doesn't deal with the problem; if anything it encourages it. These people need support and education. Why the hell would they want to change if things are being made more comfortable for them?
And who will bear the cost for this two-for-the-price-of-one legal obligation? Not the court, that's for sure. |

Its because of the hand holding in that great white craphole. If there were consequences to peoples actions people would think twice. Unfortunatley you can't take a *beep* in Canada with out the Canadian governemnt or so bumb ass liberal geting their say in it. |

Men and Women over 6' have a genetic problem that makes it difficult to sit in airplanes. When do we get our free first class seats? |

It just goes to show that political correctness represents the ultimate rebellion of all that crawls against that which has height. The worse you are the more you are pandered to these days. Conversely the people who should be running the show - fit, healthy, smart young men - tend to be shat on by everyone. |

Always taking it one step too far. |

While I agree that it can suck when you're crammed into cattle class (unless you get a seat by the exits), the benefits of being tall far outweigh the drawbacks IMHO.
As for the fatties, I think that if genetic, medical, or psychiatric causes could be proven (which would be statistically unlikely) then this would be more akin to a "wheelchair ramps" debate. |

Yeah, you're right, Cornfed. People with genuine disabilities (which are who I was in fact referring to) deserve everything they get. |

Maybe you should educate yourself first before you make such sweeping medical generalizations.
Actually the irony is that it is your own laziness and ignorance that leads to your misinformed comments. |

Let's use your own source against you...

Dietary therapy
Where PCOS is associated with overweight or obesity, successful weight loss is probably the most effective method of restoring normal ovulation/menstruation, but many women find it very difficult to achieve and sustain significant weight loss. Low-carbohydrate diets and sustained regular exercise may help. Some experts recommend a low Glycemic index diet in which a significant part of the total carbohydrates are obtained from fruit, vegetables and whole grain sources.[15] |
This clealy shows that successful weight loss (though exercise and diet) is effective for treating it. This means that they don't have to be obese. I am not saying that they have to be what society thinks of as "thin", which is also wrong. Obesity (and I will admit, there might be a few cases that it can't be helped, WHICH ARE EXCEPTIONs, and don't hurt my case in the least) is caused by overeating and laziness (not doing exercise).
Trying to make obesity normal is wrong. Trying to pretend that obese people are ok or healthy is wrong. Buying junk food and feeding people who can't even get out of bed is no better than being a drug pusher.
And most definitely (unless a doctor's note is shown), these people should be forced to pay for two seats.
On another note, tall people should be able to sue for two seats now and I can not see them not being able to win. Oh wait, being tall can't be helped, so that wouldn't count. Only things you can change but won't because you are a lazy ass get through the Canadian legal system. |

Of course they wouldn't win. How would having two seats help a tall person? Doesn't make sense to me. If one seat has legroom fit for a garden gnome, having an extra seat with the same lack of legroom isn't going to help a tall person any.
Now, suing for the right to have access to a section where the rows of seats are spaced further apart, so as to accommodate people with longer legs, is understandable, and IMO absolutely should be required.
However, it's a separate issue from the two seats thing. I don't see this as trying to make obesity "normal." I see it as an attempt to make air travel more comfortable for EVERYONE, and I think it's both long-overdue and helpful.
Think about it. If you were on an airplane, randomly assigned to sit next to an obese person, would you rather that they were wedged into one too-small space, resulting in some spillage and intrusion into your personal space, or would you rather that they have some extra space, possibly making the flight more comfortable for them *and* the people sitting next to them? I mean, don't worry, you'll still have the right to laugh and point and make jokes that they're taking up two seats.
I guess I see making things more comfortable for everyone as a win-win thing, rather than some kind of zero-sum game.
As for the "fat people should back away from the conveyor belt of desserts, put down the shovel, get off their duff and exercise" sentiment ... I think that's a separate issue. It's not like there's a lot of healthy lifestyle choices that can be made 3500 feet up in the air. Have you ever seen ANYONE gorging themselves on airplane food? Do you think ANYONE is able to exercise on an airplane? Maybe fat people shouldn't get a seat at all, but should have to run on a hamster wheel in the back of the plane during the whole flight. Because that would somehow make you feel better. |

Thanks to thyroid treatments, I've gained almost 80lbs in the last year.
I've FINALLY got the pills I need and I can start to make a concerted effort to lose weight but other folks with hypothyroidism (who don't know about it) could easily be obese for legitimate medical reasons. |

I said there are a few exceptions. I wish people would stop trying to take away from what is a large problem (no pun intended). I would never judge an individual on just weight alone until I learned about them. But as a group, most cases of obesity are not due to uncontrollable reasons. And as you said, no you can lose the weight again, and if you don't, you would be classified as one of the lazy ones. I know it's not easy, but that's still a fact. |
