I'm new in Korea been here 9 months. Christmas is approaching fast but i've heard its a non event over here. I'm sort of single and most of my friends are flying out to exotic locations. My contract ends in Feb but is it worth getting away over Christmas? Or is four days of Christmas in Koea just too painful?

There's some tour/travel groups listed on FaceBook (for example). Maybe hook up with one of them.

It doesn't have to be hell. There are plenty of things to do in Seoul. Surely you must know someone who is staying around. If not go on a trip with Adventure Korea or one of those groups. Go skiing. Treat yourself to a dinner in one of the hotels with all the dressing.

Failing all that get wrecked and spend the 4 days oblivious to the world and it's festive joys.

Are you sure that you only have 4 days? If so, it would not be worth the pricey ticket out of here. I would have a spa day, a shopping day, a movie day, a night out somewhere, and maybe a hangover day.

In reality, I will attend midnight mass in Gangnam and then get on a plane to Thailand on Christmas morning. I will then shop, eat, and get massages on the beach until January 4th.

From what I remember from last year, Seoul is actually a very festive place in December.

i've only got christmas day off, so i plan to spend christmas eve drinking with friends and christmas day at some place that does a good western-style christmas dinner.

if christmas is an important holiday for you, my advice is to rsvp to one of the many christmas dinners that are planned by hotels/restaurants/bars here, because, quite frankly, you won't see much of christmas if you don't.

edit: i should add, i'm not in seoul. hopefully seoul is more christmas-y

Christmas is nice. No stress. No worry about having to do all your christmas shopping by x date. No stressing about the weather for the day you have to go back to your home town. You just plum don't work that day. Hang out with friends in Itaewon. Hoist a few.

It's a good time, really. A real nice break.

I always felt Christmas in Korea was nicer than in the States.

It is more of a laid back time, to just get together with friends and family. Not nearly the stress and commercialization to deal with. I always felt that the spirit of Christmas has been stolen from the West, and that it still could be found in Korea.

Can't believe it is already Thanksgiving in the States this Thursday.

Happy Holidays everyone.

If you've been here nine months and haven't noticed how huge Christianity is, I'm surprised.

Christmas here is a religious holiday, not a commercial/family holiday, hence not very much fun for the average person.

Well, I don't really think the 'Christmas spirit' can especially be found in Korea. It's not a very christmasy place.

Best thing to do if you're single and don't have plans is to search out others who are single and don't have plans. Sort out who has the biggest apartment and eat and drink your heads off.

By "Christmas spirit" if you are referring to the immense over commercialization of it, then you are right, you won't find that in Korea.

My point was exactly that I enjoy it more because the commercialization is not here.

How many carolers do you see in the States now? I've had carolers in Korea come to my door much more than in the States. I'd put that in the spirit of Christmas more so than how big the displays are at the stores.
