I've only been in Korea for 6.5 months (since March, minus the summer), so I don't know if this is common.
However, in a composition class the other day, at the end of my lecture, I got a smattering of applause from a handful of students! Wow! I was so surprised (and, naturally, pleased). In all my teaching in mee-gook-land, I can't recall American students ever applauding.
Is this a common thing in Korean classrooms?
My TEFL approach and studies in language acquisition cause me to generally avoid lecturing, and focus instead on interaction, conversation, debates, role-playing and the like. So, I can't imagine that I'd be influenced by lecturing more, but it seemed to be encouragement to do so (and it's so dang tough to get feedback from your Korean students!). |

| Yes, it's common. It usually happens to teachers after a few weeks of teaching. |

| The only ovations I've had were when I recited a poem in a few lessons and on one or two other occasions that I can't remember. |

Really? strangee. On my second day teaching the children wept with feeling and gratitude at being in the presence of such a life changing teacher. The head teacher presented me with a bouquet and all the teachers threw roses. |

Yes, this is pretty standard at the schools where I've taught. Strange to hear that some have a different experience. Maybe it's time for them to consider another career choice. |

Bingo. I've had students tell me I was the best, most handsome teacher in the world when I let them play hangman for five minutes.
Not that I'm not handsome or the best teacher, but they must really like me. Confusing though that they named the "hangman" after me... |

I get the big round of applause when I haven't seen the class for a couple of weeks - sometimes more (due to exams and other commitments) and I get massive applause and cheers - I give it 'aw shucks you bunch of kissasses' I can't say it isn't nice though! 
It has only been a few times I have had a round of applause AFTER a class. Usually it is when I enter the room and not when I leave it. |

Me too. Usually before class, when they haven't seen me in close to a month. But, by the end of the class they are booing and want me to leave.  |

I think if they normally don't applaud at mundane things then they are being sincere.
I get "OMG TEACHER" for walking in the room. They go "OOOhhhh" when I bring out a credit card that looks exactly like a Korean one. They will give the most exagerated emotions imaginable to brighten up their lack luster days...
Sad really when the highlight of your day has to be when the foreign teacher walks in with a new colored chalk.
So I think if your students don't tell you other stupid artifical stuff then you should be proud. But if you hear "you are so handsome" everyday, take the compliments with a huge grain of salt. |
