If I stay at my school next year I'll max out at 2.5/month. Because I teach at a middle school, I only teach 18 hours a week to 1st and 2nd graders, but I also have 4 hours of after school classes on T Th, which brings me up to the standard 22 hours a week. Without doing more after school classes on MWF, which pay a measly 20,000/hour, is there any way to make more money?

I proposed an after school program at my school, where students would pay about 50,000/month and get about 8 hours of instruction. All the money would go to me though. I figured if I could get 5 students per class and run 3 classes, then that would mean an extra 750k/month.

I also thought about getting permission to leave school early, as long as I finish my 22 classes, so that I can go out and get a part time job at a hagwon.

Have any of you at public schools ever done something similar? Am I asking for too much? I explained to my co-teacher that I'm actually making less money when you factor in the exchange rate than I was 4 years ago. I thought the after school program at my school would be a great idea since the tuition I would charge would be much less than a place like Avalon or JLS.

My afterschool program pays me 10,000 per student instead of the 20,000 per class. It's not much but my it does increase my salary. My base is 2.2 and I get an extra 400,000 (non taxed) a month. An extra 400,000 is pretty nice considering the afterschool program is only once a week (2 classes).

It was offered to me, I didn't care about negotiating. I think 400 a month for about 8 classes a month is generous enough. I'm not greedy. The classes are pretty easy.

I forgot, if you complete an online TEFL course(short and cheap at $200) you get a $200 pay raise per month.

I've already got the 100 hour TESOL. GEPIK doesn't pay more than 2.5/month, and that's where I'll be at next year. I want to make at least 3.0, even if that means I have to teach a couple of after school classes each day.

Why don't you switch to SMOE, they go up to 2.7 I think.

(I've got my TEFL now too by the way) Laughing

Because I wouldn't get as much vacation, and it's not worth switching schools just to get an extra 100 or 200k/month. Plus, you have to work at the same SMOE school for a few years to get 2.7

Base salary plus after school can easily bring you to that level in your first year depending on experience of course.

Unless you have lots of extra unofficial vacation at your current school, GEPIK and SMOE offer similar vacation time i.e. 20/21 working days.

My next GEPIK contract will start at 2.3, after I reach 2.5 I will consider SMOE.

You need to fulfill the 22 hour requirement during school hours. That will free you up to teach more hours in after school program.

Schools are stingy with money. The only way they'll let you make more money, is if they can make a pretty profit off of it too.

Ask them to help you find a nearby school that needs a teacher, and see if they'll shoot you over there PT during off hours. Split the pay with them.

Just a thought.
