meh ... the Philippines what a bore. While there all I wanted to do was go home. It's pricey and parts of Manilla look exactly like Canada. I went for a nice meal on White Beach. The bill came to 150 US.!!! Complete garbage.
Cambodia, Laos, Thailand ten times more exotic, cheap and interesting. |
I think that is an important point to make.
The Philippines is different of course, but the similarities to a western country and especially to a latin country is more powerfully present...mixed with southeast asian, of course.
I really think the Philippines is much more appreciated if a person has spent a lot of time in Asia and to many different countries already, and is up to a more laid-back southeast asian version of a very western and latino heavily infused culture.
If a person hasn't went through the rites of passage of being 'templed out' in Thailand, Cambodia, etc. and wants something REALLY different and exotic, then the Philippines won't cut it.

The Philippines is one of those places, that people either really love or they just don't care for. It really depends on what you want in your vacation. For me, after being in Asia for way too many years already, I kinda like a place that reminds me of both Mexico and the United States at the same time with somewhere that happens to also be VERY Southeast Asian place as well.
Sometimes, the Philippines does seem a bit TOO MUCH like a Latin Country at times...i.e. catholicism references EVERYWHERE, and the Tagalog language borrows a lot from Spanish as well. Numbers, months, and many many other words come from the Spanish. |

Pork, Beef or Chicken ADOBO is a must. It is meat that is marinated in a Filipino sauce, and served with rice. It is probably the most well-known and famous food in the Philippines. The sauce is made of soy sauce, vinegar and garlic.
PANCIT is another...it is stir-fried noodles...
LUMPIA is the Filipino springroll. |

Manila by far. But there are casinos in most cities in the Philippines....the Filipino Casino. I've been to that particular casino in Davao, Cebu, Manila, and Bacolod. Manila has all kinds of casinos though, where the other casinos just have the one option (that I know).
If you are into Holdem Poker, they have tournaments and live games all over the city of Manila.
Now if you really want to gamble Filipino-style, cock-fighting is the way to go! Bacalod's Filipino-Casino has I believe one of the largest cock-fighting pits attached to the casino, PLUS Bacolod is famous throughout the Philippines for having the best chicken |

What other islands did you visit? You must have missed the good places. |

And for dessert, be sure to have the halo-halo (shaved ice mixed with milk and fruits, topped with a scoop of ice cream). |
