I'd be scared to travel in Islam country, though I plan on doing just that, but I guess you could take on an English style accent and act Australian and say you're from Australia as to avoid the issues of America vs. Islam. Many Islamic people in Islam countries do see it that America declared war on Islam which they don't take lightly, even on a personal level. They also don't differentiate the difference between an individual American traveler and his screwed up government out to invade Islamic countries to gain oil, wealth, and power. (just putting it how they think about Americans) I've met and talked with people from those countries in my travels and they are really difficult to reason with.

I really don't want to lie to people, but I will to see Petra and the pyramids of Giza more harmoniously. It doesn't matter if you lie to strangers, your camel guide, and taxi driver.

Just keep your lies consistent if staying in the same area more than 1 day!!!

I wonder, too, about the US State Dept throwing a fit about my goings to places like North Korea and Iran. If I could get the tourist visa without much hassle or cost, I would definitely do the trip to Iran. I'd love to go there for a month and hang out. Maybe longer if the visa would allow me to stay.

A Canadian guy who is currently walking around the world on a ten-year trek walked across Iran a few years back with absolutely no trouble. This was after 9/11 and the Axis of Evil speech. I'm pretty sure you'll be fine, but know there are good and bad people everywhere.

I can see myself now sitting in a Tehran cafe feasting on Kabobs. I'd do this trip in a second if I had the time. Money's no problem, but short vacations are crimping my style.

My friend came to Korea to visit me over the summer, and we went to North Korea. He went back to the states a week later, and customs asked him why he had an exit and rentry stamp out of ROK but no entry and exit stamp from another country (North Korea doesn't stamp passports, at least U.S. passports). He said he went to North Korea, and they held him for a bit, told him he should have notified the U.S. Treasury Department, took his information down, and let him leave.

He never heard from them again, and after doing my own quick research on the U.S. embassy's website, it appears that their only real concern is buying things in North Korea and bringing them back to the states. There is no trade between the states and North Korea, and if you are buying anything there, the website says you have to notify the treasury.

Other than that, I don't think the U.S. government really cares.

My friend back home in Texas is from Syria and he goes back evey couple of years. The middle east is pretty much the holy grail of travel for me, but I haven't had the opportunity to go yet. My friend assures me that even as an American woman traveling alone, it would be completely unlikely that I'd have any problems at all. Based off of Iran's glowing reccommendation in this thread, I'm going to start looking into a trip there in May/June.
