Just out of curiosity, how much does an average student (parent) pay monthly for ESL classes at a hagwon? Do students usually stay aboard all year long, or do they come and go? How many hours a week does a student attend the hagwon? What is the average class size that you teach, and how many students are there overall at the hagwon?

Thanks.

Most stay, many come and go. Average I'd say is 150,000 won more or less per student/month. If the school teachers other subjects as well, tuition may be higher. If a parent sends two kids they may get a discount.

Would you say the competition for students (among hagwon owners) is fierce at the moment?

Has any foreigner or gyopo attempted to start his/her own hagwon? From the surface, it looks like a very lucrative business as long as you can maintain 150 or so students.

It depends on how intensive the course is and how big and reputable it is(obviously). My last one it was 140 000 won a month but I know it can be up around 300 000 and I know of one where it is 1 000 000 won. In Gangnam who knows how much it would be???

It depends on the areas, but 110 - 150,000 seems to be the mark. I don't know of any hagwon that ofers discounts for multiple family members. I know of two foreign owned hagwons and they are doing well. One is in Gwangju and the other in Anyang.

The regular 1 month fee at my hagwan is 120 000. The TOEIC class fee is 130 000. And the native speaker only class is 140 000. Fees were about the same, give or take a "man-un", at my last hagwan too.

Oh actually, I don't work at this hagwan. I work at a company. I'd love to know what those guys are paying. I'll bet it's more than 120 000 though!

my former hogwon in Bucheon: 150,000/month, classes 3 days a week. Had 100 students, just 1 foreign teacher- me. We were doing better than most English hogwons in Bucheon. The one below us lost many students during my year there. Way too many in the city if you ask me; a couple dominate the industry (ECC being one) in the area.

In my area, there a few hagwons, a GKI, 2 GnB's & us... a little no-name small hagwon with only one foreign teacher... me! They also offer math & Korean classes. My hagwon is owned by a woman who owns a HUGE kindergarten (about 350 students, 40 staff), a TKD school, a music/piano hagwon & a ballet school.

I think a hagwon that's not a known franchise needs to offer more than just English classes to stay ahead... an all-in-one package. I don't think our hagwon would survive if it was just offering English classes only. We make by far the most money, not even sure if the other classrooms are making a profit, but without the all-in-one package, I don't think parents would be particularly interested in sending their kids to us for just English lessons only.

Students who come for 5 days a week for an hour day pay 150,000 won. If they have additional classes such as TKD or maths, they get a further discount. A number of students study maths, Korean, English and music for around 200,000 won per month. I think there are sibling discounts too.

Over 50 students come 5 days per week... about 25 or so come Mon/Wed/Fri or just Tues/Thurs.

We currently have 67 students, first time it's dipped below 70 since I started last March, but lots of kids are taking the winter break off, which I'm really happy about as I think some of these poor little tykes who put in 4 extra hours of study a day really need the break!

I've seen a lot of kids come and go, some because they're moving out of the area, some because they don't think we're doing an adequate job, some because we don't have an appropriate level class for the student, Lots of different reasons.

But I'd say we've kept about 70~75% of the students who were with us last March.

I looked at starting a hagwon where I have my mother-in-law's "ajumma power" but the neighbourhood was innundated with hagwons where the students were only paying between 80,000~100,000 for an hour per day (country Korea), 5 days per week! The cost of renting a space was much bigger than I expected... 45 million key money and a million a month rent.

I would love to set up a small kyoshil in my apartment... bring in small groups of the neighbourhood kids to tutor... I think there's a lot of money to made there once you get a network establsihed & you don't have the hassle of all the overheads, but even with an F2 visa, is just ain't legit Crying or Very sad But I think it's something you could try with an F4 visa & a permit from the dept of education. Could be wrong though!

A group of us from Dave's have formed a yahoo discussion group about business which started with a HUGE flood of emails and responses but has somewhat died off, but it's still active. Lots of good information was shared there... people like Dutchman and Ryst Helmut were wells of knowledge. I still have a lot of the info saved. PM me for more or join up!

Edit: Just checked the online site and all our emails are catalogued. Well worth a look if you are serious about setting up a business in Korea.

My predecessor told me that my hagwon charged 100,000 a month for classes five days a week. From the kids bills that I've seen, it seems its been upped to 130,000 though, we should be turning a decent profit due to pretty good classizes though.

It really depends upon the city. As with most things they tend to be more expensive in Seoul.

Mine charges about 150,000pcm expensive for the deep south but cheap for Seoul. Our Kindies pay 400,000 a month, but they get 3 lessons a day (two english) and lunch.

My school is fast approaching 250 students at a modest 130,000 per month. With only 3 waygooks and two Koreans.. we're hopin' of late.

Either way..looks like the schools makin' decent bucks.
