My hagwon told me last week there's some mandatory seminar this coming Saturday in Yeoido for foreign teachers.
I can't find anything about it. I remember one last year and I didn't go and nothing happened but my director is saying he will be fined if my co-worker and I don't go.

Would appreciate a heads-up about this...

Well I wasn't told about it... we'll all be told about it on Friday before we leave from work. Don't worry there will be a "special train" for us.

These seminars, or foreign teacher training meetings etc. come up every year. They are held in various locations around Korea at various times during the year, last only a few hours, are really stupid and a waste of time, and you are required to attend.

Yes, they are mandated by law. You are required to attend.

Yes, your hogwan can be fined if you don't attend. If your school has enough bad marks against it, your school can even be closed. Not attending will give you school bad marks.

These "annual training" meetings are only required for hogwan foreign language teachers. Japanese and Chinese foreign teachers are required to attend as well.

Every year, many teachers claim that they are not required to attend, but this is only for legally registered hogwan teachers.

If your boss hasn't signed you up with the local education office you are illegal and you won't have to attend one of these meetings. You can be an illegal teacher even if you have an E2, insurance and pension if you've never been registered with your local education office.

Thanks everyone. I'm off work this week but my co-worker said the manager decided we aren't going because he doesn't want to drive us there. haha
