Do you ever make up classes in the event that students do not come to English class? For example, if a 4th grade class goes on a snowboarding trip and misses English class, then the homeroom teacher wants to make up the classes during prep time. Would it be fair to ask for overtime, or is OT just for additional classes?
The reason why I ask is that lately, at least 10 hours of my prep time a week is now taken up with homeroom teachers wanting me to make up classes ....I didn't mind it at first, but now it's cutting into my prep time.

If the classes are made up during the same week, (i.e. Monday's class was cancelled due to xyz, and they want you to do a makeup on wednesday) then I just go with it, this happens seldom and far more classes are cancelled completly rather than made up (and I doubt I'd have a leg to stand on as I'm still teaching the same number of hours/week). If they are asking you to make up classes that were cancelled last week, or last month...then I'd ask for exra pay as it isn't your fault the classes were cancelled and it is now pushing you over your 22 class/week limit. I'd say for 1 class every month or so, I'd let it go...but if you are talking 10 a week...then that's A TON of extra work you're putting in, and should be compensated accordingly!

If it's not over your 22 per week, I'd just do it. If it is, then I'd ask for OT. It's not even possible for me to make up classes. I have 3 coteachers and we all have different schedules. Even if we wanted to make up a certain class, we can't get together for the same week.

Usually, my coteachers make up for it by teaching it themselves. But they don't do it very often...so the question is...why should you?

Remember the kids come back in February for like a week or two. If you're really behind, combine lessons.

When my 6`s went to Jeju then I had to make up classes that the 4th graders missed. I didnt want to do it because it was their teacher who wanted them to go see the high school dance competition. I didnt cancel the class. In the end, I ended up helping my coteacher out because she is a good woman.

Never make up classes. We're suppose to have a fixed schedule just like any other K-teachers.

It's not your fault that they had to cancel the classes.

Sometimes they bump classes around to different periods, but it's OK since I get my free prep/computer game/Daves ESL/research time while I would had been teaching.

The only classes that I've had to make up are the ones that I missed because my Korean co-teacher didn't tell me about a schedule change until after the class. They are great like that.

Classes cancelled due to trips are usually not made up.

If your make-up classes are outside of school hours then you are entitled to OT pay. If your classes exceed the maximum in your contract, then you are also entitled to OT pay.
